Hardeeville Motor Speedway Goes Hawaiian on Saturday Night

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (August 6, 2001) - This Saturday night, August 11th, the Hardeeville Motor Speedway will be transformed into an island of excitement and fun for the entire family. Fans are encouraged to wear their flowered attire as the first 500 fans through the gate will receive a complimentary lei. The classes of racing in action will be the O.C. Welch Ford-Lincoln-Mercury Late Models, Legends Cars, Mini Stocks, Street Stocks and the "full contact racing " of the Xtreme Stock Cars.

One of the many highlights this Saturday will be the "Big Kahuna Street Car Showdown" where a limited number of off-the-street cars will compete in one lap competition on the 1/5 mile D-shaped oval. The race will consist of two cars at a time in a one-on-one format with the winner continuing to compete. The loser goes home. The final driver remaining in the single elimination tournament will be crowned "The Bug Kahuna." Anyone interested in pre-entering for the "Big Kahuna Street Car Showdown" should call 843-784-7223 for details.

Drivers visiting victory lane last week at "Coca Cola Night" include Tommy Porter, Jr. (Late Models), Scott Thorne (Xtreme Stock Cars), Corey Fletcher (Legends Cars), Jimmy Lang (Legends Cars Young Lions), Glenn Mappus (Street Stocks), Raef Judd (Open Wheel Modifieds), Mark Terry (Mini Stocks) and Michelle Oaks (Lady Legends Cars).

Grandstands open at 5:00 p.m. each Saturday. The green flag waves at 7:05 p.m. for qualifying races, followed by the feature events. The Hardeeville Motor Speedway is located three miles south of I-95 (exit 5 in SC) on Highway 17 South or just ten miles north of Savannah on Highway 17.

Ticket prices are $10 for adults, with reduced rates for seniors, military and children. Children under five are admitted free. Information is available at www.hardeevillespeedway.com or by calling (843) 784-RACE.

Other HMS Pit Notes - Beginning this Saturday, all Late Models and Street Stocks competing with mufflers will have their minimum weight requirement reduced by 100 pounds. The Mini Stocks using mufflers will have their minimum weight requirement reduced by 50 pounds. Since the Legends Cars are sanctioned internationally by INEX, the Hardeeville Motor Speedway officials do not have the authority to alter their rules, speedway officials highly recommend the use of the mufflers in the Legends Cars division.

- Living up to his title as one of the "Iron Men of HMS," Bob Gossett of Hilton Head, S.C. competed in three different divisions last Saturday night. Gossett finished 7th in the Legends Cars, 4th in the Street Stocks and 2nd in the Xtreme Stock Cars class. He also owns the cars of Corey Fletcher and Michelle Oaks, which won the Legends Cars and Lady Legends feature respectively.

- More Legends Cars from the Wilmington, N.C. area are expected in the pits this Saturday night as the Coastal Plains Speedway in Wilmington, N.C. has trimmed their schedule back to the first and third Saturdays of every month.
