St. Charles, MO (May 3, 2002) Kevin Gundaker is well on the way to recovery from injuries suffered on Wednesday, April 24, when a car broadsided his motorcycle. The accident occurred in St. Charles, MO near the GFR Motorsports shop, where Kevin's UMP Late Models are prepared. His injuries include a broken leg, which required surgery to insert a rod in the upper half of his leg. He also suffered broken ribs, a bruised liver and internal bleeding.

STLRacing.com talked with Gundaker, who is currently at St. John's Hospital Rehab Center in St. Louis, MO., briefly on Friday, May 3. Gundaker hopes to be released from the hospital as early as Monday, which is his 47th birthday. His physical therapy is going very well and he is already ahead of schedule. If his rehab continues as well as it is, he plans to return to the track the first weekend in August.

Gundaker said he was already feeling anxious and can't wait to get back into his UMP Late Model. He also stated that he hated missing the UMP Summer National Series as well as the weekly competition at the I-55 Raceway in Pevely, MO. However, Jim "Pizza Man" Shereck has reached an agreement with Gundaker to drive the car at the UMP Spring Nationals on Sunday, May 19th at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds in DuQuoin, IL.

Gundaker wanted to extend his gratitude to the fans for their support and prayers. He said it really is a good feeling to know that so many people care about him.

Kevin finished fourth in the UMP Late Model National Points and had sixteen feature wins in 2001. A regular competitor at the I-55 Raceway in Pevely, MO, Kevin was set for another great season in 2002.
