Goodyear-Shod Teams Threaten Records in Midwest
The cars and stars of the Championship Auto Racing Series (CARS) opened their pre-season testing at Indianapolis Raceway Park April 17. The Stock Car and Super Truck classes will race exclusively on Goodyear tires this season and the first test went well.
The Stock Car class races on Goodyear's D2271 and D1111 short track tires, while the truckers will campaign on Goodyear's D2562 and D2563 short track tires. The tires all have an eight-inch tread width.
Former Super Truck champ Steve Blair, driving a stock car, turned laps well under the existing track record for the class and the most common comment about the new tire package was a notable increase in stability.
The CARS teams have another test at IRP on April 24.
Chris Gabehart set a track record for the Sunoco Super Series at Anderson Speedway on April 17. Gabehart averaged 74.092 mph in qualifying around the high-banked, quarter-mile oval
The Series races exclusively on Goodyear tires, using Goodyear's D2402 on the right side and the D2372 on the left.
The NASCAR Grand National Division Busch North Series is scheduled to start its 2004 season April 25 at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, N.H. The 2004 season marks the third year for Goodyear as the exclusive tire supplier for that series.
Since the Busch North teams have competed on Goodyear tires, they have broken 11 track records.
Goodyear has been involved with the NASCAR Grand National West Series for decades. This season marks the second straight season for Goodyear as the exclusive tire provider for the series.
Mike David leads the standings, after two races, with 320 points. He is just ahead of Mike Duncan, who has 319.
The rules pertaining to car construction for the West Series and Busch North Series are the same and the tires Goodyear makes for the two circuits are largely the same as well. For example, the tires the West Series raced on at Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield, California earlier this month were the same as what the Busch North Series teams will use at Lee on April 24.
The next race for the series is scheduled for May 1 at California Speedway. The event will be part of the track's NASCAR Nextel Cup weekend.
Multiple Xtreme Dirtcar Series Racing Around Country
The Pacific Coast Xtreme DirtCar Series races at Madras Speedway in Madras, Ore. April 24, the second race of the season for the Series. The PCXDCS is based in the northwestern United States. The Series races exclusively on Goodyear's X400 tread compound, one of the most robust compounds in Goodyear 's racing stable.
Jeremy Shank won the season opener at Sunset Speedway in Banks, Ore. The opener attracted 29 entrants.
The Carquest Western Xtreme DirtCar Series has held two races already this season. John Silva and Devin Crockett are tied atop the standings. The CWXDCS schedules races in the southwestern United States, mostly in California.
The series allowed teams to use tires from the former provider on three of the four-wheel positions in the first few races of the 2004 season, provided that each team used a Goodyear Eagle on the right rear corner. In each race this season, a car using Goodyear rubber on all four corners was the winner.
Donnie Moran and Jimmy Mars lead the Stacker 2 Xtreme DirtCar Series standings. The top national circuit for late model dirt track racers, the Stacker 2 series competitors typically have two Goodyear tread compounds to choose from at each event.
Series officials announce which Goodyear Eagles will be supplied in advance of each event.
Brian Birkhofer is third in points with and Earl Pearson Jr. is next. It is interesting to note that numerous drivers are tied for 55th place and one of those drivers, with two starts to his credit, is NASCAR star Bill Elliott.
Moran has the rare distinction of leading the championship standings of two Xtreme series. He also sits atop the Southern Xtreme DirtCar Series driver standings with 538 points. David Smith is second with 393.
