ASA CHALLENGE CHOOSES GOODYEAR AS OFFICIAL TIRE SUPPLIER
SAUK CENTRE, Minn. (May 22, 2006) -- The ASA Minnesota Challenge racing series for short track stock cars has selected Goodyear as its exclusive tire provider. The tiremaker will also contribute to the championship points fund.
The six-race series competes on three paved tracks in Minnesota and attracts some of the top short track drivers in the region. Former champions include Todd Hansen (of Minneapolis), Dan Fredrickson (Lakeville) and Donny Reuvers (Dundas).
"We feel the decision to contract with Goodyear Racing as the only tire provider gives the teams their best chance to compete equally and cost-effectively," said Tim Olson, the founder of the series. "We're happy to have the series unified on one tire. We're excited to have Goodyear Racing involved with us this year because their involvement says a lot for the future of our series."
Goodyear will supply the popular D2602 Eagle for the right side tires. The D2602 measures 27 inches tall and 10 inches across the tread. Goodyear's D2572 will be supplied for the left side for all series racers. The D2572 measures 26.5 inches tall and has the same tread width.
The series brings together teams from three tracks and unites them under a set of rules that allows for slightly differing engine combinations. The cars can weigh as much as 2,850 pounds and the engines generate about 500 horsepower.
"ASA Racing is proud to be a part of the ASA Minnesota Challenge Series and we are all proud of our association with Goodyear," said ASA executive Dennis Huth.
The three tracks that will host series races are Raceway Park in Shakopee, I-94 Raceway in Sauk Centre and Elko Speedway in Elko. Raceway Park's racing surface is a slightly banked quarter-mile oval, Elko's track is a banked 3/8-mile track and I-94 has a 3/8-mile high-banked oval. The different track configurations will challenge the drivers and their teams, as is common for touring racers.
But the heritage of the tires selected for the program indicates a perfect fit for the various applications in the ASA Minnesota Challenge. The D2602 Eagle is used on all four tire positions by the Desafio Corona stock car series in Mexico, a series that competes on both road courses and a variety of ovals as well. It is used successfully in concert with the D2572 on short tracks all over North America.
Both the D2602 and the D2572 are produced in Goodyear's Technical Manufacturing Center in Akron, Ohio.
The Challenge rules allow drivers to count only their best five performances in the six events toward their championship total. That means the drivers championship probably will not be decided until the end of the final lap of the last race of the series.
Regardless of who wins the title, every team in the series will benefit from Goodyear's long history of consistent reliability.
