Team LA Motorsports announces ASA plans.
LaGrange, Ind. (June 17, 2002) -- Team LA Motorsports announced today their plans for Joel Kauffman to compete in three ASA Racing Series events in 2002. Kauffman, 16, one of the brightest stars in stock car racing, will make his ASA debut at Salem Speedway in the Tecumseh 300 on Saturday July 20. Kauffman drives the number 40 LA West Luxury Vehicles / Choo Choo Customs / Dick's Auto Parts Chevrolet with guidance from Scott Hansen as driving coach and crew chief.
"I'm very excited to compete in three ASA races this season and confident with the experience I have gained in the Sunoco Super Series at these racetracks. Salem is one of my favorite tracks, so we are looking forward to making our debut on the highbanks. Gaining experience and finishing laps is our main goal," said Joel Kauffman. "We're very fortunate to have Scott Hansen working with us at Salem, Toledo and Winchester. He is one of the legends of ASA and I compare him to Brian Ross and Junior Hanley of the Sunoco Super Series."
The second race for Kauffman in ASA will occur at Toledo Speedway on August 10-11, one week following the Sunoco Super Series' second stop at the historic half-mile Ohio oval. The LaGrange, Ind., driver will compete in his third ASA event later in the season at the Winchester 400 in October. At Winchester, Kauffman will race in ASA's season finale and also in the 150-lap event with the Sunoco Series.
Beginning an outstanding season in the ultra-competitive Sunoco Super Series, Joel Kauffman has built a 27-point lead in the Salem, Ind., based series over series veteran and former National Legends Champion Matt Hagans. Through the initial six races, Kauffman scored two victories at Toledo Speedway and at the quarter-mile oval of Anderson. The 16-year-old sensation leads several 2002 Sunoco Super Series statistical categories including wins, poles, top fives, top tens, laps led and money won.
The youngest winner in Sunoco Series history is excited about his three races with ASA, but still remains focussed on his primary goal of winning the high profile Sunoco Super Series Championship.
"Our goal from the start of the season has been to win the Sunoco Super Series championship. We are still focussed on that goal. We need to continue to race consistently and finish in the top five. This series has some of the toughest competition so we need to remain consistent or the point leads could easily slip away."
