Salem, IN (August 25, 2003) -- Officials from the Sunoco Super Series and Motordrome Speedway announced the addition of a 150 lap special event on Saturday September 27th. For the Sunoco Super Series it will be a non-points event, but interest is still very high. There will not be a mandatory pit stop, and teams are not allowed to change tires unless they have a flat. These are measures to help control the costs, and encourage participation by all the local teams.
"We have a lot of interest from our racers in going to this new race track," Sunoco Super Series founder R. J. Scott noted. "We've got a groundswell of support in the Ohio-Pennsylvania region, and that group is really excited. For the fans, we already have commitments from some of our top drivers. Add to them the flavor of the local teams stepping up to take the challenge, and you've got the recipe for a great event and the chance to build a fall tradition."
According Motordrome race director Ron Brutt, "We are really excited to get the chance to host this race with the Sunoco Super Series. We got a late start on actually making it happen, but our goal here is to get the groundwork done on what could be a great annual event. With some rule changes we are making, we are going to get our local guys more competitive with the SSS teams, but what we lack in horsepower, we should make up in track experience."
Sunoco Super Series director Glenn Luckett added, "This is a great market for Sunoco. As a result, Motordrome could easily be a track we see on the schedule next year as a stop on our championship tour. It is a relatively easy drive, just straight over on 1-70." Motordrome Speedway is located just off I-70 near Smithton PA, only 25 miles from downtown Pittsburgh.
For the teams that choose to, there will be an open practice on Friday night September 26th. On September 27th, the gates will open at 11:00 am, with 1-½ hours of practice from 3:00 to 4:30, qualifying at 5:30, with the Sunoco Super Series 150 lap feature scheduled to start at 7:15.
