ATLANTA (May 29, 2001) - In a city where country music rules, Joey Clanton and the Steve Dale Motorsports team will be hoping for a little music of their own, namely a victory song on their new Gibson guitar. The winner of this weekend's American Speed Association (ASA) Luxaire 300 at Nashville Speedway USA not only takes home the prestige of the victory, but also wins a musical souvenir from the home of country music.
Clanton will be heading to Nashville for this Saturday's ASA event with hopes for his third victory of the season. The team has been a contender in each race of the 2001 season, and is definitely viewed as a team to beat. Clanton returns to ASA racing after a strong performance at Concord Motorsports Park where the team finished sixth on May 20th.
The .596-mile, high-banked Nashville Speedway USA oval is a favorite of Clanton's. "Nashville is similar to my home track in Georgia, Peach State Speedway. The banking is higher than Peach State, but the overall feel of the track is similar," stated Clanton. "I like Nashville. I grew up on country music and racing, and Nashville has both, so I am really looking forward to the weekend."
Last year's Nashville race was a fiery event with several cars suffering heavy damage in lap two of the feature. Clanton, himself, was slightly involved in the accident, running most of the race with a damaged front end. Despite the injured car, Clanton was able to move up 16 positions during the race and finish fourth in the final rundown.
Clanton and the team continue in their pursuit of their ultimate goal: To win the 2001 ASA Series Championship. Ironically, the No. 83 Zaxby's Real Chicken Chevrolet Monte Carlo sits in third place, 83 points behind the leader.
The green flag will drop for the best short track racing in the country at 9:00 p.m. EST for the upcoming ASA Luxaire 300, and will be broadcast live on The National Network (TNN).
