Pendleton, Ind. (April 18, 2002) -- Following a dominant performance at South Boston Speedway, South Boston, Va., on Saturday, April 13, ASA Technical Inspectors elected to conduct a thorough examination of Joey Clanton's number 83 car. It was the third con secutive race this season that the Georgia native has led the overwhelming majority of laps and the second in which he captured the pole starting position.
Officials routinely conduct an inspection of the three podium finishing cars as well as two cars taken randomly. In this instance, Kevin Cywinski and Gary St. Amant were the podium cars along with the sixth- and eighth-place finishers, David Hole and Todd Kluever.
"Because of his dominance (Clanton), we decided to go ahead and review the engine," said Joe Balash, ASA Technical Director. "We went through all parts of the post-race inspection process by pulling seats, crush panels, etc. It was a thorough examination a nd at this time we are declaring the car to have passed all aspects of the inspection process."
Clanton's car, owned by Steve Dale Motorsports, had the engine taken to Katech Engine Building and Development of Clinton Township, Mich. There it underwent a thorough disassembly including inspecting the seals, intake manifold, cylinder heads, profiled th e camshaft, inspected the bottom end of the engine (pistons, connecting rods, bolts, crankshaft, etc.) to insure that everything was exactly as built.
The engine was dynamometer tested and performed as specified in ASA Test parameter guidelines.
In addition, the wiring harness, a link between the engine controls and the PCM, was disassembled and inspected by Howell Engine Development of Marine City, Mich., the designer of the unit. It proved to be in original working order with no performance enha ncement having been done to it.
The inspected equipment is being returned to Steve Dale Motorsports immediately.
