Leaty Wins RoC Qualifier at Oswego
Son Mike Finishes 7th
Williamson, NY - Jan Leaty has said he always has fun racing at Oswego Speedway. He must have really enjoyed himself last week, as he led all but the first lap and was victorious in the 75 lap Sunoco Race of Champions qualifier at the "Steel Palace."
For the most part of the day, it looked as though rain would win out. However, the track management worked hard, and despite an early evening delay, was able to get things dried out so racing could resume.
Thirty-five modifieds crowded the infield at the 5/8's mile oval. The luck of the draw set the starting order for the three heat races. Jan piloted his Pace Electronics/Heluva Good Foods Troyer to a runner-up finish in his heat race, after starting 6th. He was then eligible for the redraw to set the starting order of the top 12 feature qualifiers. He drew the pole.
Jan's son Mike was also on hand, driving the second Branich Motorsports team car for the second time this year. Mike started 10th in his heat, and steadily moved forward to grab the 5th qualifying spot in his heat, placing him 14th on the starting grid for the feature event.
Twenty six cars started the feature. When the green flag flew, Jan settled in second place, and was able to retake the lead on lap 2. From there, he was not seriously challenged throughout the remainder of the race, despite several restarts after cautions. At the same time, Mike worked steadily up through the field settling into 7th and holding on to the position at the checkered flag.
With the victory, Jan has a guaranteed starting spot in the 54th Annual Sunoco Modified Race of Champions to be held in mid September at Oswego.
