Advance Auto Parts/Super DIRT 100 set at Big Diamond.
Landisville, PA - November 28 - It was announced at the recent DIRT Winter Meetings that Fritz and JoAnn Roehrig will join forces with Bob Miller in 2003 to bring the DIRT Big Block Modifieds to Big Diamond Raceway in Minersville, PA. On Wednesday night, July 18, the Advance Auto Parts Modified Super DIRT Series will run at 100-lap event on the 3/8-mile banked Big Diamond oval.
The event will mark the first time Big Block Modifieds have seen action at Big Diamond on the current 3/8-mile configuration. It will also be the first time since 1982 that the big blocks have run at all at Big Diamond. In 1981 and 1982 MODCAR sanctioned five events on the 1/3-mile oval with Bob Toreky taking two wins and Gary Gollub, Roger Laurano and Dave Schoffstall earning single wins.
Defending Big Diamond NASCAR Modified champion, Keith Hoffman of Whitehall, PA contacted the speedway this week and expressed his excitement about competing against DIRT's best at Big Diamond, where he has won three straight track championships and 25 career feature wins. In fact, with the addition of Big Diamond to the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series schedule, he will be racing on two consecutive nights at his home tracks. Hoffman also won five times and was second in final points in 2002 in his big block modified at New Egypt (NJ) Speedway where the DIRT Advance Auto Parts Tour will run on Thursday, July 19.
There are several other Big Diamond regulars that also have been competing with the big blocks from time-to-time that are also excited about DIRT's Advance Auto Parts date at Big Diamond. Duane Howard, Meme DeSantis, Jeff Strunk, Craig Von Dohren, Billy Pauch, Rick Schaffer, Shawn Reimert, Ray Swinehart and Smokey Warren all ran several events last season in big block modifieds at area tracks and/or with DIRT. They will be able to run either their DIRT legal big block rides or their Big Diamond rides, provided they meet DIRT tire and weight rules. Also the Big Diamond 358 cars will be permitted to run alcohol.
The top five in Big Diamond Modified points as of July 18 will be guaranteed starters in the Advance Auto Parts 100 while the top 12 in DIRT points will enjoy the same insured status. Time trails are slated to start at 7:15 PM.
The full Big Diamond Raceway schedule is not yet ready for release as the track is still trying to determine what date or dates will be selected for the United Racing Club 360 Sprint Cars.
The season is now slated to open on Sunday afternoon, March 31, with the Sportsman Stocks and Roadrunners in competition with the Modified class running in a practice session. 358 Sprints will also be permitted to practice. Plans call for the Sportsman to run in an extra-distance feature.
One week later on April 6 at 2PM the Modifieds and the KARS Doorways Unlimited 358 Sprints join the Roadrunners. And on April 13, it is Modifieds, Sportsman and Roadrunners. Plans are unconfirmed for the Easter Weekend, but action will shift to Friday nights on April 25. A final, detailed schedule will be released soon.
