Minersville, PA - September 3, 2000 - Billy Pauch of Frenchtown, NJ charged from his 17th starting spot to chase down race long leader Duane Howard (Oley, PA) to take the Post Digital Graphics/ Rieck's Printing Coal Cracker Modified 100 at Big Diamond Raceway on Sunday evening. Pauch won $10,200 in the event which was rain-delayed from Friday night, September 1. "I was really happy there was an outside groove," commented an elated Pauch. "I had to really work hard starting in 17th. I had to pass a lot of really good cars. I need to thank the guys on my crew. They have worked all year long preparing three different cars for three different nights of racing and they do a great job." "We almost scrapped the idea of coming," commented winning car owner D. A. Hanson. "We were here Thursday to shake down the brand new car and kept replacing magnetos. We just could not get it straightened out and decided to go home and race our regular car in New Jersey on Friday. With the rain-out to Sunday, there were no races at our home tracks so we came up and here we are (in the 901 Pub/Big Diamond Winner's Circle). Billy Pauch took the win in the new 724 Auto Sales/Greenfield Dodge 'Pauch-modified Tobias' #1P followed by Duane Howard in the Hutt's Glass 85A, Jeff Strunk (Bethel, PA) in the Motor Truck equipment W9, Keith Hoffman (Whitehall, PA) in the Wengers of Myerstown 5, Randy Bailey (Kutztown, PA) in the Bailey Fabrications 81B, Kyle Weiss (Hamburg, PA) in the Brickel's Collectibles 21K, Terry Meitzler (Kutztown, PA) in the Heritage Ford 14B, Smokey Warren (Jonestown, PA) in Don Keffer's 99X, Chip Slocum (Ewing Township, NJ) in trhe Giels Automotive 61, and Meme DeSantis (Temple, PA) in the Take Out Wholesale Mushroom Soil 88T. Eleventh place finisher Tom Umbenhauer (Richland, PA) in the Clay Realty Group 19 was the final finisher on the lead lap. With his third place finish, Jeff Strunk clinched his second straight Motor Truck Equipment Company/Kenworth/Cummins Dual Track Modified championship over Terry Meitzler in one of the closest finishes in the history of both the Dual Track and Tri-Track point championship. Kyle Weiss started on the pole for the 100 and led the opening lap before Duane Howard, who started second by the luck of the draw, charged under Weiss in turn four to take charge on lap 2. Weiss was challenged by Randy Bailey, Jim Hauer (Lebanon, PA), and John Willman (Zionsville, PA) while Howard pulled away and began lapping traffic on lap 11. Willman faded before retiring and Ray Swinehart (Bechtelsville, PA), Craig Von Dohren (Barto, PA) and Keith Hoffman battled for his fifth spot. They continued caution free and Howard opened up a huge lead, lapping nine cars by lap 29 before second place Weiss was finally able to pass the first car already lapped by Howard. Weiss lost second place to Randy Bailey on lap 23 and the caution flag flew for the first time on lap 31 with Von Dohren pitting with a flat tire. At this point only 11 cars remained on the lead lap with Howard and when the race restarted on lap eleven lapped cars lined-up between Howard and second place Bailey. Trailing Bailey, still on the lead lap, were Weiss, Hauer, Hoffman, Umbenhauer, Pauch, Meitzler, Jeff Strunk, Tom Pompei (Sellersville, PA), Kyle Strickler (Gouglersville, PA), and Slocum. When the green returned the heavy traffic enabled Weiss, Hoffman and Umbenhauer to get by Bailey on laps 37 and 38 with Hoffman also getting by Weiss for second. The race was stopped to clear a lap 43 tangle in turn four with Hoffman now second to Howard but six lapped cars still remained between them. Weiss was third trailed by Randy Bailey, Pauch, Hauer, Umbenhauer, Jeff Strunk, Slocum, Pompei, Strickler, and Meitzler. Smokey Warren outgunned Howard on the restart and regained his lost lap when the yellow flew on lap 47. Also on the restart Hoffman got trapped in traffic and Weiss regained second pressured by the hard charging Pauch. At the halfway mark the lead lap order read Howard, Weiss, Pauch, Hoffman, R.Bailey, Hauer, J. Strunk, Umbenhauer, Slocum, Pompei, Meitzler, Strickler and Warren. Pauch continued his charge in his orange numbered and lettered white 1 car and took second on lap 51 While the lapped car of Meme DeSantis battled with Howard. DeSantis regained his lap from Howard on lapped 59 and with the lapped cars now out of his way Pauch was geared up for the battle. He followed Howard, who was on DeSantis' tail, with Hoffman, Hauer and Bailey right behind until lap 63 when he dove to the inside in turn three to take the lead. With the lead lap cars now bunched together, they shuffled spots from lap-to-lap but Pauch remained in control. Hoffman continued in third with Strunk taking fourth from Hauer on lap 87. Tom Pompei and Kyle Strickler just lost the lead lpa on lap 94 when the yellow flew on lap 95 as Hauer developed tire problems forcing him to the pits and dropping him from fifth to deep in the field, two laps down. The lap counter froze on lap 98 until the event was restarted and the final two laps would go under green. But there were no major changes when the green flew and Pauch took his second career Big Diamond win, his first since 1992. Qualifying heat winners were Glenn Strunk (Bechtelsville, PA), Craig Von Dohren, Ray Swinehart, Duane Howard, Keith Hoffman and Kyle Weiss. Consolation winners were Meme DeSantis, Smokey Warren and Jeff Strunk. The B-Main was won by Jason Andrews of Palmerton, PA. In the accompanying Roadrunner 20, Dean Ulsh of Auburn, PA took his fourth win of the year in his 2000 championship season. He was trailed by Kirby Schlappich (Temple, PA), Jason Oswald (New Ringgold, PA), Dave Miller (Pine Grove, PA) and Willie Metz (Auburn, PA). Steve Barrick's Program Dynamics presented their season Most Popular Driver trophies based on the vote of fans. Jeff Strunk won the honor in the modifieds, John Deatrich, Jr. did the same in the Sportsman and Glenn "Buckshot" Rowan, who sold his car late in the year to buy a sportsman for 2001, won the honor in the roadrunners. David Guinther won the drawing for a NASCAR "Big Red Boat" cruise for two. This ends the 2000 racing season at Big Diamond Raceway. The 2000 awards banquet for the track will be held on November 24 at 7PM at the St. Nicholas Hall in Primrose, Pa just outside of Minersville.
