VERNON, NY - The DIRT Big Block Modified division will make its first appearance at the New Utica-Rome Speedway on Thursday August 24 for the first time in 13 years. On this much anticipated event, the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series for the Big Block Modifieds will invade the speedway for a special 100 lap affair paying $6000 to the winner.
Big Block Modifieds were the main headline division at Utica-Rome, from 1981-1982 and 1985-1987, which were the first two sets of years the speedway was sanctioned by DIRT Motorsports.
Popular drivers and top stars during this time period at Utica-Rome were track champions David Lape, Jack Johnson, Brett Hearn, Kenny Tremont, along with Randy Glenski, Tom Wilson, C.D. Coville, Lou Lazzaro, Ray Dalmata, Bob McCreadie, Alan Johnson, Merv Treichler, Freddie Brightbill, Mike Romano, and many more.
Jack Johnson is currently leading the Utica-Rome Speedway all-time Big Block Modified
Feature Winners List, with 19 victories at the track where he was once part owner.
An excellent turnout of DIRT Big Block Modifieds is expected, and a handful of drivers have never turned a lap at the speedway since the last Big Block race in 1987, which was won by Tim Dwyer. Just some of the top current day stars looking for the 100 lap huge payday at Utica-Rome are Danny Johnson, Alan Johnson, Steve Paine, Andy Bachetti, Bob McCreadie, Tim McCreadie, Gary Balough, Jack Johnson, Kenny Tremont, Brett Hearn, Gary Tomkins, Pat Ward, Tim Fuller, Jimmy Horton, Billy Decker, Doug Hoffman, and many more.
The race, sponsored by Nice N' Easy Grocery Shoppes, should be an all out shootout on the lightning fast half-mile Utica-Rome clay oval, located in the outskirts of Vernon, NY. The winner of the feature will become a guaranteed starter in the Rolling Wheels Raceway World Series. Time Trials will set the lineups for the heat races, and the top six time trialers will advance on to the five lap Exiss Trailers Dash for Cash. Heat races, along with consolation races will set the lineup for the much-anticipated return of the Big Blocks.
Also scheduled for that night is a special DIRT Sportsman race, paying $500 to the winner.
The gates will open at 4pm, with time trials beginning at 6:15pm and heat races beginning at 7pm. More news on this event will be forthcoming over the next month or so.
