GRANBY, Qué., August 4, 2000—It was a very busy night at Autodrome Granby when 39 cars in the Modified divisions showed up for the 15th annual Mr. Modified Championship sponsored by DJL Construction. Alain Boisvert in the Modified division and Clément Therrien in the Modified 358 class were the ones to visit the winner’s circle.
First, in the Modified category, a restart with two laps remaining in this 35-lap feature race following Richard Chauvin’s stop on the track, was the reason for Dominic Dufault’s loss. He was looking for his first win of the season. Leader since lap 12 after a driving mistake by Steve Poirier, Dufault had chosen the outside groove for the restart. But, Boisvert who was in the inside, was faster than him at the green flag and Dufault was never able to regain his position. He finished second followed by Claude Brouillard, Robert Ranger, Clément Therrien and Steve Poirier.
In this feature race, Clément Therrien was more than spectacular at the steering wheel of his Teo/Excavation Martin Roy powered by a Chrysler engine. Dead last at the start of this race, he made his way to the fifth place even if he had to concede more than 100 horsepower to many of his opponents. Brouillard was able to reduce from 26 to 12 points the lead margin of Steve Poirier who is in the first place in the Molson standings.
Earlier in the evening, Dominic Dufault, Denis Labonté and Steve Poirier were the winners in their respective heats.
In the Modified 358, Therrien was able to register his fifth success of the season by having the best on Réal Lafrance, Claude Brouillard, Mario Moreau and American driver Leon Gonyo. Fifth in the standings before the evening, Therrien now finds himself in second spot, but he has 117 points less than Réal Lafrance. It will be hard to catch up to him.
On the last lap
Stéphane Larivière took his fifth triumph of the season and his second consecutive by having the best on Alain Brochu on the final lap of this 12-lap feature. Brochu who was the leader since the drop of the green flag in this race without any cautions, was second followed by Daniel Messier.
Since the two programs he was plagued by mechanical problems,, Jean Boissonneault never lost a feature race. Last Friday night it was his third straight win after leading from wire to wire. He was followed by Michael Lussier and Marie-Claude Hébert while in the 4 Cylinder division, Pierre Grondin scored his seventh consecutive victory. Certainly a new record. Patrick Dupont was second followed by Éric Haman.
