Ashley Utts Returns To Ventura Raceway's Pony Stock Class

CAMARILLO, Calif. (May 13, 2004) -- Ashley Utts, the teenaged stock car racer, returns to action at Ventura Raceway Saturday when the Pony Stock division shares the quarter-mile track with sprint cars, modifieds and midgets.

Utts, who is also a volleyball player at Oaks Christian High School, was recently profiled on Fox Sports West's LA Times High School Spotlight.

Utts said that she is the only racecar driver at Oaks Christian but she is not the only female racer at Ventura.

"Ventura Raceway has a history of women winning championships, especially in the Pony Stock class." Utts said. "It's no accident that I started my career there. Lots of women have raced there, including my mom."

Utts is 16th in points after an up and down night in her most recent outing. She started seventh in her heat race and finished fourth, earning the eighth starting position in the feature. But a collision-induced spin resulted in a broken suspension part and knocked her out of the race with a 16th-place finish.

"The car is ready to go and so am I," Utts said. "My dad has been working with me on a few things and I'm ready to try them out." Utts drives the Custom Printing-sponsored Ford Mustang. She represents the third generation in her family to drive a racecar, following her grandfather and both parents. Utts Racing has a total of 50 main event victories scored at racetracks around the Southwestern states.
