John Cleland took victory today at the opening round of the ASCAR Mintex Cup, Saturday, May 26 at Rockingham Motor Speedway.

In front of 12,000 fans, Cleland's Speedsport Chevrolet started on pole and led the opening laps. After six lead changes and a pit stop, Cleland slowly eased past oval track champion, Colin White on turn 4 of the final lap to secure victory.

The main ASCAR feature event was revised to a 20 lap demonstration race for the American V8-engined stock cars, due to lack of development time in dry track conditions on the Rockingham oval.

Earlier attempts to test the drivers at Rockingham this month were thwarted by bad weather, leaving just a few days of sunshine to put all 20 drivers through their paces.

"It would have been unsafe to put on a full-blown race, but we wanted to ensure that the fans had the show they had come to see," said ASCAR Managing Director, Mike Schmidt. When we return to Rockingham on July 29, the cars and drivers will all run at 110 per cent.

The ASCAR demonstration race also saw BBC Top Gear TV presenter Tiff Needell complete the event in the Ikon Office Solutions Chevrolet. The full story of his ASCAR exploits will appear on TV in the next couple of months.
