The TA's newest recruit, the 450 bhp 'Stealth Car' stole victory by just seven hundredths of a second in the closest-ever finish in the fourth round of the 2003 ASCAR 'Days of Thunder' series last Sunday. In a race full of drama, Team TA driver Ben Collins kept his nerve to hold off a last minute challenge and retain the ASCAR championship lead.

The Territorial Army's fully camouflaged Chevrolet ASCAR is currently the fastest car in this years European series. Driven by ex-F1 test driver Ben Collins, the car, dubbed the 'Stealth Car' has already broken two lap records and is the leading contender for this years Championship title.

The 'Stealth Car' is the result of the TA's title sponsorship of leading ASCAR racing team, Deuce Racing RML. ASCAR racing is the latest motor racing sport to arrive in the UK from the USA and features 450 brake horse power Chevrolets racing at 190mph around an oval racing circuit.

The 'Stealth Car' is the latest tool in the TA's national recruitment drive. Captain Danny Dugan, TA Royal Logistic Corps explains, "There are many synergies between ASCAR motor racing and the TA. Motor racing is about teamwork, fitness, personal challenge, dedication and excitement, all elements that members find in the TA. It is due to synergies like this, and the vehicle engineering opportunities in the TA that make this sponsorship an ideal fit."

"One of our main recruitment audiences is young men and women aged 17 to 24 years old. We believe the ASCAR sponsorship will help us not only reach this particular target group but also excite and engage them with the TA."

"We plan to communicate with potential recruits at a variety of different levels," Captain Dugan continues, "Firstly, the sponsorship offers us a presence at all ASCAR races in 2003, with crowds of up to 50,000, many of whom fall within our target audience profile. We also plan to take the 'Stealth Car' out and about to our regional units with an extensive roadshow activity. Finally, the sponsorship gives us access to a variety of different media that would otherwise not be open to us."

ASCAR racing is currently the fastest growing motor sport in the UK and the 2003 series is set to be as exciting and challenging as last year. Rockingham have raised the stakes both on the track, with a one million dollar prize fund and off the track, with live entertainment planned for race days.
