Oswego, NY - The 2002 International Supermodified Association contingent is ready to roll for their season opening weekend. The ISMA winged supers will travel to Lee USA Speedway and Seekonk Speedway on Saturday, May 4 and Sunday, May 5. It's the second straight year that ISMA has opened its season at these two New England speedplants and the anticipation is high.
Last season the weather was kind to the ISMA owners and drivers as both races got in without a hitch. The Jersey Jet, Joey Payne, in the Boisvert 66, brought home the opening day checkers at the Lee USA Speedway leading the entire 50 lapper, with Nick Fornoro hot on this tail. Lou Cicconi began his road to a successful season in which he finished second in points, by finishing third at Lee. Joe Gosek and Chris Perley finished up the top five at this 3/8 mile New Hampshire oval.
A large crowd greeted ISMA's 2001 return to Seekonk on the following day. The 1/3 mile Massachusetts' oval and a long stretch of green flag racing, provided one of the most exciting races seen at the "Cement Palace". Scott Martel, with checkered almost in hand, had been fending off the advances of Rowley Rocket, Chris Perley, for the final ten laps of the race. Perley used a lap car to gain the advantage on the last lap of the 75 lapper to take the laurels away from the Bradford, Mass. driver. Martel, who had led 74 of the 75 laps, finished up second. Nick Fornoro, Lou Cicconi and Joe Gosek, rounded out the top five in the competitive event.
All the eager supermodified teams are sure to be there to put on another great show. This is sure to be another "barnburner" weekend for the traveling winged supermodifieds. While Joey Payne has yet to report in a ride for 2002, most of the other top runners in ISMA are back onboard for another season. Look for veterans Joe Gosek, Russ Wood, Chris Perley, Dave McKnight, Lou Cicconi, Howard Page, Dan Soule and more, joined by some sharp rookies, to be on hand. It's also the start of the new Regional Champions series for ISMA and each driver will be gunning for those titles as extra incentives. You won't want to miss this one.
