Schiavo Wins Star Mazda Race, McDowell Wins Championship
MONTEREY, Calif. (Oct. 19, 2004) -- Luis Schiavo won the Star Mazda North American Championship Series presented by Goodyear race at Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca. The race was part of the American Le Mans Series weekend at the famed coastal California venue.
Goodyear is the presenting sponsor of the series and the exclusive tire supplier. The 42-car field competed on Goodyear's D2177 and D2178 bias-ply tires. The race distance was 28 laps around the 2.238-mile road course.
Michael McDowell finished second, followed by Brian Frisselle, Scott Jenkins and Dan Di Leo. McDowell was the top qualifier. A field of 40 cars started the race.
McDowell clinched the series championship with his finish. Di Leo finished the year second in the standings.
Nick Steele won the Expert Championship and Doug Peterson won the Masters Championship.
