WILLIAMS GROVE RAINED OUT -- MAYNARD YINGST MEMORIAL FRIDAY

MECHANICSBURG PA -- A persistent drizzle wet the track sufficiently to force cancellation of the super sportsman and sprint car races Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway.

The light rain started at the most inopportune time, which was before the track had been completely run in. When the rain stopped an effort was made to dry the racing surface. After ninety minutes very little progress had been made and officials were forced to cancel the program.

Williams Grove Speedway will present the Maynard Yingst Memorial for sprint cars on Friday night, June 12. The limited (358) sprint cars will also be on the card.

Maynard Yingst, formerly of Linglestown, was a highly successful sprint car star in Central Pennsylvania for several years. He cut short his sprint car career to accept a job as crew chief for drag racer Bruce Larson of Dauphin. Together they went on to win a national championship.

Yingst died five years ago after suffering a massive heart attack at a drag race in Texas. He was 43.

On of the sentimental favorites for this week's Maynard Yingst Memorial will be Todd Shaffer. His car owners, Gary and Pattie Beam and sponsor Leiby's Mobile Home Sales, were long-time backers of Yingst during his sprint car days. Their car is still a white #88, which was Yingst's color and number through most of his driving career.

This week's double header will kick off a four-week stretch where the Williams Grove pit area will be filled with nothing but sprint cars. In addition to the Grove's weekly sprint car division, the United Racing Club (URC) will be here on June 19, and the limited (358) sprints will return on June 26.

The Mitch Smith Memorial, with a $10,000 winner's share, will be presented on July 3.
