ASCS Sprints on Dirt at I-96 & Owendale This Weekend
TULSA, Okla. (July 5, 2006) -- Manitou Beach, Michigan's Ken Mackey will try to build upon his burgeoning Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by Victor Reinz championship points lead as the series takes to a pair of Michigan dirt oval this weekend.
On Friday night, the series makes it second stop of the season at the 0x00bd-mile I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, MI, where Mackey scored his first series win of the year on June 2. Then on Saturday night, the 0x00bc-mile Owendale Speedway in Owendale, MI, features the ASCS Sprints on Dirt as the feature portion of its annual Super Race Day.
With two triumphs in the series last three events, including "King of Michigan" honors on Friday night at Hartford Speedway Park, Mackey has broken open a tight points race by establishing a 46-point lead over former series champion Dain Naida of Belleville, MI.
Still short of the series' midway point of the 2006 season, Naida can close the gap with a strong weekend, as can other top contenders Gary Fast (Kalkaska, MI), Gregg Dalman (Lyons, MI) and Kyle Patrick (Tilbury, ONT).
Others among the current top ten in ASCS Sprints on Dirt points include Kevin Atkins (Warsaw, IN), Joe Bares (Traverse City, MI), Davey Brown (Eaton Rapids, MI), Louie Carufel (Port Huron, MI) and Ryan Grubaugh (St. Johns, MI).
Defending series champion Tim Norman of Warsaw, IN, is less than 20 points out of the top ten after missing a pair of events due to a broken hand suffered in a shop accident.
Friday's action at I-96 Speedway is slated to get under way at 8:00 p.m., while the ASCS Sprints on Dirt portion of Owendale Speedway's Super Race Day will get under way at 7:00 p.m.
