Mackey Tops ASCS Sprints on Dirt at I-96
LAKE ODESSA, Mich. (June 2, 2006) -- Ken Mackey became the fourth different winner in as many Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by Victor Reinz events this season by wiring the field in Friday night's 20-lap feature at I-96 Speedway.
Two-time series champion Dustin Daggett tried to mount a mid-race challenge, but Mackey was up to the task and charged to the checkered flag to claim the victory aboard the Griff's-powered Brewsters Fine Food & Spirits/Torco Fuels No. 25m Maxim.
"I've never run a 360 before this year, so getting me used to it has been the biggest challenge for us," the nine-time Butler Motor Speedway 410-ci Sprint Car champion explained in victory lane. "I could definitely hear Dustin, I knew he was there."
Mackey earned the pole position for the feature event by charging from the tail of his heat to take the win, then outgunned fellow front row starter Daggett for the point at the drop of the green, with Brett Mann, Dain Naida and defending series champion Tim Norman in tow.
Following a quick yellow for Davey Brown's off-track excursion after two rounds, the final yellow flew three laps later when Mike Brecht came to a stop on the frontstretch. Brecht retired for the night and surrendered the series point lead in the process.
Back under way, Mackey set a quick pace as Daggett held off Mann for second. As lapped traffic came into play, Daggett closed to Mackey's rear nerf bar and appeared ready to make a bid for the lead.
But Mackey was flawless in lapped traffic, slipping away in the final rounds to secure the victory and assume the series point lead. Daggett settled for second, with Mann taking the show position. After starting twelfth, Darren Long gained four positions over the final half of the race to snare fourth, with Norman rounding out the top five.
Ben Rutan crossed the stripe sixth, with Naida, Kyle Patrick, Kevin Atkins and 18th-starter Tim Allison completing the top ten.
Daggett, Mackey, Naida and Mann topped heat race action for the 34-car field, with Cory Seeling winning the 10-lap "B" Main. oel Hummel flipped in the evening's second heat race, walking away without injury.
