Atkins on Top of Cherry for ASCS Sprints on Dirt Victory
FIFE LAKE, Mich. (July 21, 2006) -- Kevin Atkins was one of the few drivers that went to the top side of Cherry Speedway on Friday night and made it pay off by winning the 25-lap Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by Victor Reinz feature event.
After moving to the top of turns one and two, Atkins climbed from third to first on the 20th lap by charging past both John Gall and leader Kyle Patrick while approaching lapped traffic then pulled away for his first win of the 2006 season aboard Loren Dalrymple's Hogue-powered Mayer Plumbing/Elliott's Heating No. 34 J&J.
"It looked like Kyle (Patrick) was going pretty good middle to top at the start, but once they got to traffic everyone committed to the bottom," said Atkins after his third career SOD triumph. "I figured that I could get enough momentum to get around Gall, and ended up getting a run on the leader."
With Patrick and Gall on the front row of the feature event, the caution flew before the field made it to the first corner for a three-car tangle on the fronstretch including current series point leader Ken Mackey, Ben Rutan and Bill Johnson. Mackey was able to restart minus his nose wing, but Rutan and Johnson retired to the pit area.
The second attempt to start the feature proved successful with Patrick leading Gall into turn one. While Patrick opened up a sizeable advantage in the early rounds, Atkins continually searched the racetrack to move up from his fifth starting spot as the rest of the field stuck to the low side.
By the seventh round, Patrick caught the tail of the field. Following lapped traffic, Patrick, Gall and Atkins eventually pulled away from the remainder of the field.
Working lap 20, Atkins went to the high side of Gall to take second spot and continued his momentum down the backstretch to race past Patrick. Atkins continued to pull away until a caution appeared for Steve Irwin, who stopped sideways on the backstretch. Irwin retired pitside before the restart.
With a lapped car between himself and Patrick, Atkins pulled away on the restart to take the win in front of Patrick, Gall, 12th-starter Dustin Daggett and Davey Brown. Defending series champion Tim Norman, Ryan Grubaugh, 20th-starter Gregg Dalman, Mackey and Dain Naida completed the top ten.
Gall, Naida, and Patrick won the three heat race events.J Tomorrow night the Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented Victor Reinz makes the short trip to Merritt Speedway near Lake City, MI, for the second of three appearances during the 2006 season.
