ASCS Sprints on Dirt to Fife Lake & Merritt

TULSA, Okla. (July 17, 2006) -- The Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by Victor Reinz march on this weekend with events at Cherry Speedway in Fife Lake, MI, on Friday night and Merritt Speedway in Merritt, MI, on Saturday night.

While "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin carries a two-race win streak into the weekend, it's Manitou Beach, MI, hotshoe Ken Mackey holding the lead in the series championship points race.

Mackey holds a 40-point edge over former series champion Dain Naida of Belleville, MI. Kalkaska, MI, racer Gary Fast is another 31 points back in third, with Lyons, MI, racer Gregg Dalman and Tilbury, ONT, "Tornado" Kyle Patrick tied for fourth.

The balance of the current top ten includes Kevin Atkins (Warsaw, IN), Joe Bares (Traverse City, MI), Louie Carufel (Port Huron, MI), Ryan Grubaugh (St. Johns, MI), and Davey Brown (Eaton Rapids, MI).

Dalman was the ASCS Sprints on Dirt winner in the series first stop at Cherry Speedway in 2003, with two-time series champion Dustin Daggett topping the Cherry Speedway main events in 2004 and 2005.

Currently ranked 12th in points despite missing several events in his early pursuit of the ASCS National Tour, Daggett has topped four of the past seven events at Merritt Speedway, including one win in 2005 and a June 17 charge from the tail of the field this year. Other 2005 SOD winners at Merritt included Len Robinson and Bill Johnson.

Friday's card atop the semi-banked, 3/8-mile Cherry Speedway clay oval gets under way at 7:15 p.m., with Saturday's action on the semi-banked, ¼-mile Merritt Speedway clay oval going green at 7:30 p.m.

The 2006 Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by Victor Reinz slate consists of approximately 30 nights of racing at fourteen different tracks throughout Michigan, Ohio and Canada.

In its 15th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing in the United States, the American Sprint Car Series will present approximately 180 nights of racing at nearly 100 tracks throughout 27 different states and Canada in 2006 including the National Tour and its Regional Tours (Gulf South, Mid-South, Midwest, Northern Plains, Patriot Sprint Group, Rocky Mountain, Sooner, Southern and Sprints on Dirt).
