Ten Days until Sprint Bandits Debut at Devil's Bowl!
TULSA, Okla. (March 9, 2004) -- Only ten days remain until Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, TX, hosts the first ever event for the O'Reilly Sprint Bandits on Friday and Saturday, March 19 and 20.
The O'Reilly Sprint Bandits debut follows nearly 26 years to the day that Devil's Bowl Speedway hosted the first World of Outlaws event. While Norman Martin topped the initial World of Outlaws preliminary feature, it was Jimmy Boyd who would enter the record books as the "official" winner of the first WoO feature at Devil's Bowl Speedway on March 18, 1978.
Now, just over a quarter of a century later, Devil's Bowl Speedway will once again serve as launching ground for a new Sprint Car series and there will be no shortage of entries expected to vie for the honor of entering the Sprint Bandits win ledger first.
"We had the first Outlaws race here in 1978 so we thought it would be really neat to have the first Sprint Bandits race too," commented Devil's Bowl Speedway track promoter Lanny Edwards. "I think the Sprint Bandits is going to be the best thing to happen to 410-ci Sprint Car racing in quite a while, so we're excited to have them here for their first race."
More than 40 cars are expected for both nights of racing action at the landmark event atop the high-banked ½-mile clay oval, including three- time World of Outlaws champion Sammy Swindell, nine-time NCRA Outlaw sprint champion Gary Wright, five-time Knoxville Raceway champion Terry McCarl, defending ASCS National champion Travis Rilat, 2003 ASCS Speedweek champion Shane Stewart, WoO frontrunner Daryn Pittman, Aaron Berryhill, Jerrod Hull, Nick Smith, Joey Saldana, Kelly Kinser, Danny Smith, Randy Hannagan, Ricky Logan and Jesse Hockett among others.
Both nights of action will feature the O'Reilly Sprint Bandits innovative new format consisting of full programs of heat races, qualifying races, "B" Features and an "A" Feature. The top four finishers in Friday night's "A" Feature will be locked into Saturday night's $6,000-to-win finale.
Founded by Emmett Hahn, the Sprint Bandits series has been created in an effort to revitalize 410-ci Sprint Car racing, in part by utilizing cost-cutting rules including the use of a series head, spec right rear tire and eliminating the wicker bill on wings. These rules will also combine to unhook the cars, thereby making the driver a greater part of the equation, resulting in more competitive Sprint Car racing.
Devil's Bowl Speedway is located six miles east of Dallas' I-635 on US 80, then three miles south on Lawson Road. Racing action is slated to begin at 8:00 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday night. For additional information, contact the track at 972-222-2421.
