O'Reilly Sprint Bandits Set for Sooner State Showdown

Tulsa, Okla. (July 1, 2004) -- Race fans can wrap up the Fourth of July holiday weekend by enjoying a rare opportunity to witness the wide-open excitement of 410-ci Sprint Car racing in the Sooner State, as the O'Reilly Sprint Bandits will provide plenty of fireworks at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway on Sunday, July 4, and Tulsa Speedway on Monday, July 5.

Shane Stewart leads the Sprint Bandits troops into the weekend double. Although shut out of victory lane through the series inaugural half dozen events, the Bixby, OK, native has posted a handful of top-five feature finishes to enter the weekend with a 26-point advantage over Forney, TX, hotshoe Travis Rilat in the championship points chase. Norman, Oklahoma's Danny Jennings is just two more points back in third, with Tulsa-area drivers Foster Landon and Zach Chappell tied for fourth.

The O'Reilly Sprint Bandits list of winners is an impressive one thus far, with Sprint Car legend Sammy Swindell and defending ASCS National Champion and 2002 Non-Wing Ultimate Challenge winner Travis Rilat each snaring a pair of victories. Five-time Knoxville Raceway champion Terry McCarl and nine-time NCRA Outlaw Sprint Car champion Gary Wright have also notched single victories in Sprint Bandits action.

Along with point leader Shane Stewart, a number of home-state shoes will try to defend their Sooner soil, including Jennings, Landon, Chappell, Aaron Berryhill, Wayne Johnson, Nick Smith, and Darren Stewart.

Numerous interstate rivals will vie to take the Sooner booty across state lines, including Texas aces Rilat and Wright, Kansas shoes Jason Martin and Tony Bruce, Jr., Iowa reps McCarl and Colin Northway, Show-Me-Staters Jerrod Hull and Toby Brown, and Razorback Sean Walden.

Rather than subject fans to the monotony of time trials and the parades that ensue in heat races and dashes, O'Reilly Sprint Bandits fans will get to enjoy the all-out racing excitement of the O'Reilly Sprint Bandits format on both nights, which includes heat races aligned by pill draw followed by a like number of fully inverted qualifying races based upon passing points, with feature lineups determined by combined points from both heats and qualifiers. The format, which has drawn rave reviews through each of the series initial six events, places a premium on each position gained and ensures the most intense of racing on each and every lap of every race.

Sunday's July Fourth Showdown atop Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway 3/8-mile clay oval is slated to get under way at 7:00 p.m. State Fair Speedway is located on the Oklahoma State Fair Grounds near the intersection of NW 10th and May Avenue. For more information, contact the track at 405-948-6796. Racing action on Tulsa Speedway's 3/8-mile clay oval is set to get under way at 6:30 p.m. on Monday evening, July 5. Tulsa Speedway is located north of Tulsa on US 75 to 66th Street, then east. For more information, contact the track at 918-425-7551.
