Crawley Corrals COMP Cams ASCS Speedweek Opener
BATESVILLE, Ark. (July 9, 2004) - Three-time American Sprint Car Series national champion Tim Crawley of Mabelvale, AR, picked an opportune time to snare his first series victory of 2004 by racing to a wire-to-wire victory in the opening round of the 12th Annual COMP Cams ASCS Speedweek at Batesville Speedway Friday night.
Crawley survived a pair of cautions along the way and was virtually unchallenged as he raced to his 32nd career O'Reilly ASCS National Tour presented by Love's Travel Stops & Country Stores and Classic Trailers feature victory and first ASCS Speedweek triumph since 2000.
Crawley earned the front row outside starting position by racing from sixth to first in the evening's fourth heat race, alongside polesitter Garry Lee Maier who accomplished the same feat in the preceding heat race.
Crawley jumped into the lead as Maier's mount stumbled badly on the initial green flag, negating the start. Maier coasted to a stop on the speedway before the ensuing restart and retired to the pit area, allowing defending ASCS Speedweek champion Shane Stewart to move up into the pole position.
Crawley outgunned Stewart as the green flag waved again, with fourth-starter Gary Wright quickly moving into second. Crawley wasted little time separating himself from his rivals, opening up nearly a straightaway lead by the time he approached lapped traffic on the sixth round.
With Crawley well in command, Wright nearly tagged the turn two concrete on the seventh round, allowing Stewart to regain second. Stewart's pass was negated however when Natalie Sather spun to a stop in turn two moments later.
Back under way, Crawley continued to set a torrid pace aboard the Dynotech Performance Affiliated Food Service No. 87 Avenger, with Wright, Shane Stewart, Darren Stewart and Zach Chappell chasing.
Wright stayed within six car-lengths this time and was poised to challenge as Crawley once again encountered lapped traffic after 15 round. Before Wright could close to Crawley's bumper, the red flag flew with 18 in the books when Sather made hard contact with the turn four wall. Sather was uninjured, although her mount was heavily damaged.
Set for a seven-lap dash to the checkered flag, Crawley once again checked out and raced to the stripe unchallenged. After plugging a deflating right rear tire under the red flag, Wright held on for second, with Shane Stewart in the show position. After starting eleventh, Darren Stewart crossed the stripe in fourth, with Chappell rounding out the top five.
Travis Rilat earned the race's Hard Charger award by racing from 16th to sixth, with Terry Gray, A.G. Rains, Mike Ward and Nick Smith completing the top ten.
Sam Hafertepe, Jr., utilized a provisional starting position for the A Main and raced from 21st to 13th.
Wright, Gray, Maier and Crawley topped heat race action for the 32-car field, with Marshall Skinner racing to the checkered flag in the 12-lap B Main.
Toby Brown's night came to an early end when he tagged the turn two wall on the fourth round of the opening heat race. Although shaken, Brown emerged otherwise uninjured but done for the night. Andy Goin also escaped injury following a wild turn two flip on the eighth round of the B Main.
Jan Howard crossed the stripe first in the third heat race, but was disqualified when he failed to report to the scales.
