Wood Whips ASCS Sooner Region Foes at Ada
ADA, Okla. (June 26, 2004) - Danny Wood raced to a wire-to-wire victory in Saturday night's 25-lap non-stop feature at Oklahoma Sports Park to become the first repeat winner through eight American Bank of Oklahoma American Sprint Car Series events thus far in 2004.
After original pacesetter Zach Chappell exited with engine woes on the initial start, Wood raced to a straightaway advantage by the race's mid-stages then survived a late charge from Foster Landon to post his second win in as many nights aboard the Wells-powered Harvill Industries No. 44 Eagle.
After charging from sixth to second in the evening's third heat race, Chappell led the feature field to the original green flag with rookie pilot Preston Peebles II alongside. Chappell jumped into the lead in the opening two corners only to slide to a stop in turn four when his motor locked up, negating the initial start.
Wood assumed the pole position upon Chappell's exit and grabbed the early lead, with fourth-starter Danny Jennings and sixth-starter Landon engaging in a spirited battle for the runner-up slot.
Wood stretched his advantage to a half straightaway by the time lapped traffic came into play on the sixth round as Jennings and Landon diced for second. Landon eventually secured the second spot on the tenth round while battling through lapped traffic. Wood stretched his advantage over Landon to nearly a straightaway by the midway point, as 11th-starter Neighbors relegated Jennings to fourth.
Wood's large lead began to diminish rapidly as he encountered heavy lapped traffic in the final five rounds, with Landon quickly closing the gap. Wood's quick early pace proved to be enough however, as he took the checkered flag with a slim three car-length advantage over Landon's Carbone-powered Turnpike Van & Pickup Parts No. 11f CMC-chassis.
Neighbors claimed the show position, while Jennings outdueled current ASCS Sooner Region point leader Andy Shouse over the last half of the race for fourth. Peebles crossed the stripe in sixth, while Darren Stewart charged from 18th to snare seventh. Rookie shoe Barry McCord posted his best finish of the season by taking the checkered in eighth, with past series champions Kevin Ramey and J.P. Bailey completing the top ten.
Wood, Peebles and Shouse topped heat race action for the 27-car field, with Jason Martin racing to the checkered flag first in the 12-lap B Main.
