Big ASCS Sooner Weekend in Store!
TULSA, Okla. (August 11, 2008) -- There will be some bonus racing action in store as the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region makes its final H.E. Bailey Turnpike double of the 2008 season with events in Oklahoma City and Lawton.
The weekend's double will include three main events over the two nights of racing action.
Friday's card at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway will include double features, as the night will open with the feature event from June 13 that was postponed by rain. A full card will follow that makeup feature.
Then on Saturday night, the ASCS Sooner Region makes its final stop of the season at Lawton Speedway, where surging title contenders Gary Taylor and Joe Wood, Jr., both captured career first series feature wins in earlier events this season.
Washington-state native Taylor snared his first career ASCS Sooner Region at Lawton Speedway in April and has added another pair of wins since.
Oklahoma City's Wood picked off the first of three consecutive series wins in the June stop at Lawton.
Wood and Taylor have climbed to third and fourth in Sooner points, respectively, after missing the series' season opener.
And with eight feature events remaining, including this weekend's set, they still find themselves chasing defending series champion Brian McClelland and Kolt Walker.
Tulsa's McClelland, who has picked off a pair of series wins this year, enters the weekend 49 markers ahead of West Texas racer Kolt Walker. Wood is 81 points off the lead pace, with Taylor another ten points back in fourth.
Eighteen-year-old Matt Covington of Glenpool, OK, enters the weekend ranked fifth, with the balance of the top ten including Lawton's Michael Brown, Justin Melton (Flower Mound, TX), Sherman Davis (Sand Springs, OK), Eric Baldaccini (Keller, TX) and Johnny Miller (Burleson, TX).
Covington and Taylor are slated for the front row of Friday night's make-up feature at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway. The complete scheduled feature lineup is available at www.ascsracing.com/racenotes.asp?ID=57949&yr=2008.
Friday's action at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway fires off at 7:30 p.m., with Saturday's event at Lawton Speedway going green at 8:00 p.m.
