ASCS Sooner Region to OKC & Lawton One More Time
TULSA, Okla. (August 15, 2006) -- The American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region is set for its final H.E. Bailey Turnpike weekend of the season with events at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway on Friday night and Lawton Speedway on Saturday night.
While the series championship points race is entering the stretch drive with the crucial pair of events, the weekend also marks the last hurrah for State Fair Speedway and Lawton Speedway track announcer Randy Ward, who will be moving on to a sports director position with a network affiliate in San Angelo, TX.
While Ward possibly calls his final ASCS events, the championship tension will be thick as defending kingpin Sean McClelland of Collinsville, OK, and Texas racers Sam Hafertepe, Jr., and Kevin Ramey each try to stake a claim upon the 2006 crown.
A mere 32 points separates the trio with just four events remaining on the 2006 slate including this weekend's double. Currently, McClelland holds a 16 point edge over Hafertepe, with both drivers notching three Sooner Region wins. Shooting for a third series title, Fort Worth's Ramey is another 16 points back in third.
Tulsa's Brian McClelland enters the weekend ranked fourth, with Burleson, TX, shoe Johnny "Baja" Miller rounding out the current top five. The balance of the current top ten includes 2001 series champion J.P. Bailey (Fort Worth, TX), 17-year-old Dex Eaton (Owasso, OK), Jimmy Taylor (Oklahoma City, OK), 19-year-old Justin Melton (Flower Mound, TX) and Derek Cottrell (Fletcher, OK). Eric Baldaccini of Keller, TX, is just four points out of the top ten.
Friday's action at Oklahoma City' s State Fair Speedway gets under way at 7:30 p.m., with Saturday's card at Lawton Speedway firing off at 8:00 p.m.
State Fair Speedway is located at Oklahoma City's Oklahoma State Fair Grounds near the intersection of N.W. 10th and May Avenue. For more information, contact the track at 405-948-6796.
