ASCS Sooner Region Ready for Lawton
LAWTON, Okla. (September 12, 2005) -- With Sean McClelland leading the way, the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region makes it third and final stop of the season atop Lawton Speedway's quarter-mile red clay oval this Saturday night.
From Collinsville, OK, McClelland is shooting for a three-race sweep of the American Sprint Car Series Sooner Region events contested at Lawton Speedway this season. McClelland fought off National Tour invader Tony Bruce, Jr., to win the April 30 feature, then made a dramatic last lap pass of Danny Jennings to top the July 2 event.
With 17 races already in the books, McClelland has raced to victory lane a series' best five times to stretch his advantage in the championship points race to 52 markers over 2002 Sooner kingpin Danny Jennings of Norman, OK.
In addition to Saturday's card at Lawton Speedway, Jennings has the September 24 event at Cowtown Speedway in Kennedale, TX, to close the gap on McClelland. Also, an October 15 event at Mid-America Speedway in South Coffeyville, OK, has been tentatively scheduled as well.
While McClelland and Jennings lead the way into Saturday's card, Cody Branchcomb of Sapulpa, OK, enters the event third in points. Tulsa's Brian McClelland has climbed to fourth in points, with Foster Landon of Collinsville rounding out the current top five.
The balance of the current top ten in points includes Kerry McAlister (Mustang, OK), 2001 Sooner Region champion J.P. Bailey (Fort Worth, TX), Derek Cottrell (Fletcher, OK), 16-year-old Dex Eaton (Owasso, OK) and 70-something Earnest Jennings (Norman, OK).
Saturday's racing action at Lawton Speedway is slated to get under way at 8:30 p.m.
Lawton Speedway is located in Lawton, OK, off I-44 Exit 36, then 2.5 miles west on Lee Boulevard, then 1.4 miles south on Sheridan Road. For more information, contact the track at 580-355-6417.
The 2005 American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region slate consists of 20 events at nine tracks throughout Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and Arkansas.
In total, including the O'Reilly ASCS National Tour, the Southern Tour and the Sooner, Gulf South, Rocky Mountain and Midwest Regions, the American Sprint Car Series will sanction nearly 100 nights of racing in 2005 at approximately 50 different racetracks throughout at least 18 different states.
