Rilat Ropes ASCS Sooner Region Win at Cowtown
KENNEDALE, Texas (April 5, 2008) -- Travis Rilat recorded his first win of 2008 as the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region opened the season with a wild night atop the high banks of Cowtown Speedway's 0x00bc-mile clay oval.
Rilat assumed the lead on the fourth lap of the evening's 30-lap headliner when early leader Kevin Ramey suffered engine problems and then held off a late bid from defending series champion Brian McClelland to secure the win aboard his Shark-powered F&J Construction No. 29 Triple-X.
After the feature event's original polesitter, Brian Parker, spun on the initial start, the stage appeared to be set for a showdown between front row starters Ramey and Rilat. Ramey gunned into the lead at the outset, but would lead the way for only three circuits before pulling pitside with terminal engine problems.
Rilat took quick advantage, but fourth-starter McClelland wouldn't let the past ASCS National champion get away with an easy win. McClelland kept the pressure on at times during the race, with Rilat only slipping away when traffic came into play.
The race's final caution, which flew after 27 laps when Andy Shouse spun to a stop against the turn three barrier after slugging his way from 18th to third, gave McClelland one last shot to take the win away from Rilat as no lapped cars separated the top two runners on the restart.
With McClelland working the topside of turns one and two in particularly strong fashion, Rilat was up to the task and beat McClelland to the stripe by three car-lengths for his eighth career ASCS Sooner Region feature win and third at Cowtown Speedway.
McClelland settled for runner-up honors, with Marvin Lough advancing from eighth to claim the show position. Kolt Walker charged from 17th to finish fourth, with Claud Estes rounding out the top five.
Ryan Hall was sixth, with Matt Covington, J.P. Bailey, Don Grable and Billy Melton completing the top ten.
McClelland, Bailey, Parker, Estes, Ramey and Kathryne Minter topped heat race action for the 41-car field, with Walker and Scott Reneau winning the twin "B" Mains.
The night got off to an inauspicious start when Garry Lee Maier tumbled down the frontstretch as the green flag flew upon the first heat race. Maier returned for "B" Main action but retired to the pit area early with lingering problems.
The red flag flew again in the second heat race when Dalton Steed got upside down in turn four, with T.J. Herrell backing off the top of turn one two laps later and junking his mount.
A botched start in the second "B" Main found Charlie McDonald parked atop Koby Barksdale's overturned mount, with Kathryne Minter slamming into the turn three railing headlong after contact with Shouse on the second lap of the main event.
There were no injuries.
