RUTZ HAMMERS FIELD AT SKAGIT SPEEDWAY DIRT CUP TUNE-UP
There is no better time to be peaking than the week before the annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway. And the man of the evening has to be Travis Rutz who lapped all but the second and third place finishers to win the 25-lap Dirt Cup Tune-Up race. In other racing action Seth Bergman became the first two-time winner in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints with Larry Jobe winning his first ever Pioneer Ford Outlaw Hornet Main.
To start off the evening Brandon Harkness set fast time with a blistering 11.327 clocking to set the pace for the field. Heat race wins went to Kyle Johnson, Toni Lutar and Travis Jacobson. Harkness led the first 5 laps of the Open main, before Rutz caught him in traffic. Then it was all Rutz pacing the field and making short work of the lapped traffic. Rutz lapped everyone but Marc Huson and hired gun PJ Chesson to win the last race before the 34th Annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup presented by Foley RV, Monaco Coaches and KM Resorts of America June 16-18 at Skagit Speedway.
Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprint points leader Steve Parker extended his points lead by winning his heat race and finishing second in the 20-lap main event. Seth Bergman won his second main of the season ahead of Parker and a strong running Richard Thornton who finished third. The two different number 23's of Parker and Bergman won the heats and had a great points night to boot. Jason Bloodgood won the Hard Charger award passing 9 cars on the night.
For Larry Jobe, the first win of his Pioneer Ford Outlaw Hornet career was sweet. He hunted down early race leader Mike Ploeg from his tenth starting position to take over the lead on lap 14 and held off second and third place finisher Greg Hibma and Jody Walker at the checkered flag for the win. Ploeg and Ryan Higby won the heat races.
Next week is the 34th Annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup. Racing is Thursday, Friday and Saturday for the $25,000.00 top prize and over $135,000.00 purse.
