"FLYING WITHOUT WINGS" BCRA/SCRA Show by Becky Abbey-Heckt
Sorry for the delay in results for the Saturday night show. The track was dry and slick. Too dry for many of our out-of-town drivers. The track was wet down two times over the the course of the evening.
The BCRS cars numbered only 13 so we didn't have a B-Main. In the mai event though was pretty racey although the #11 car of Marc DeBeaumont checked out on the rest of the field, there were good races back in the pack. The 2nd and 3rd place cars of Ray Derby and Floyd Alvis (60 years young) battled all 25 laps and the 4th and 5th place cars of Ken Molica and Pat Bliss did the same. Friday nights winner, local driver John Starks had a violent flip in his heat race when he hit the inside burm in turn 3 and flipped many times in almost a repeat of Burt Foland Jr.'s flip on Friday. Starks, however came back to try and race in the main but took his car to the pits on the first lap. At the finish it was DeBeaumont in 1st, Ray Derby 2nd, Floyd Alvis 3rd, Pat Bliss 4th and Ken Milica rounding out the top five.
In the SCRA the outside pole sitter Troy Cline lead the first 16 laps, while Cary Faas ran 2nd and Mike English ran third. They stayed that way for the first six laps but behind them an aggressive Lealand McSpadden had moved from his staring spot of 7th up to fourth by the 7th lap on lap 9 he got to second and then the real fun began. For the next seven laps Lealand and Troy would put on a heck of a show for the top spot. Lealand was high and Troy ran low, Lealand would take the lead for a second or tow in the corners and coming down the straights Troy would get it back. Troy was doing a great job of blocking out coming out of the corners and Lealand couldn't get by. Finally on lap 16 McSpadden got the lead and never looked back. We didn't have a yellow flag until the 22nd lap when #15 of Tom Waggoner got a flat tire and couldn't get back to the pits. On lap 24 the yellow flew again for the #1 Rip Williams car for the same problem. Then we ran the last 6 lap caution free, and at the checkers it was Lealand McSpadden taking home the big money again. On lap 25 the #63 car of Mike English got by Troy and he finshed 2nd. On lap 26 the #64 car of Cary Faas also got by Troy and would have finshed 3rd by he lost a muffler toward the end of the race and under the rules was D.Q.'d. So Troy finished 3rd. #27 of Ron Schuman finshed 4th, #45 Cory Kruseman got fifth, #7X Gar A. Howard was 6th and the highest washington finisher Saturday night was the 04 of Butch Gilbert.
