Jenkins Scores Hometown Win in Thursday STN Prelim

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (October 28, 2004) - While a loaded field from throughout the nation gathered at Little Rock's I-30 Speedway for the opening round of the 17th Annual Team Affiliated Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires, it was local hotshoe Lewis Jenkins, Jr., scoring one for the hometown crowd by upstaging the invading forces in Thursday night's 25-lap preliminary feature.

Jenkins raced past Oregon's Roger Crockett for the point following a lap nine restart then beat Shane Stewart to the line by two car-lengths to post the victory. Stewart snared the second and final transfer spot to Saturday night's $15,000-to-win, $1,700-to-start STN finale, taking the runner-up slot after early challengers Billy Alley and Gary Wright both spun from contention in separate incidents while running second.

"Man, I drove it like I stole it!", exclaimed a jubilant Jenkins in victory lane. "I'm flat worn out, I was about to fall out of the seat the last couple of laps there, this is awesome."

As 82 drivers representing 21 different states vied for the 20 feature starting slots through a series of seven heat races and seven qualifying races, it was Crockett who accumulated the most points to earn the pole position by racing from fourth to first in his heat race then charging from twelfth to second in his qualifier. Travis Rilat started on Crockett's outside shoulder after coming from sixth to third in his heat and then from tenth to first in his qualifier. Eventual race winner Jenkins gridded the field outside ASCS Sooner Region co-champion Kevin Ramey in the second row.

Crockett outgunned Rilat to take the lead at the drop of the green flag, with Jenkins racing into second on the opening round. Sixth-starter Alley charged into third on the first lap then disposed of Jenkins for second the next time around.

Alley was moving in to challenge Crockett for the lead as lapped traffic came into play after eight rounds when the race's first caution flew for fourth-runner Rilat, who suffered front end damage after clipping an infield tire exiting turn four.

Following a turn four tangle involving Robbie Standridge and Eric Schrock on the restart, Alley surrendered the runner-up slot when he looped his machine in turn four on the next attempt to restart the race.

Moving into second after Alley's miscue, Jenkins made quick work of Crockett for the lead as action resumed. Crockett then quickly slipped to fourth behind fourth-row starters Wright and Stewart the next time around after a turn four bobble.

Following a mid-race caution for Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.'s wild slide down the frontstretch after contact with Jerrod Hull, Wright moved in to challenge Jenkins for the lead on the 16th round when the caution flew for Standridge, who tagged the wall exiting turn four.

Jenkins led the way on the restart, only to have the caution reappear when Wright hooked a rut in turn three and spun. Stewart took over second as three-time Short Track Nationals champion Wright retired to the pit area after the uncharacteristic error.

Jenkins wasted little time opening up a six car-length advantage over Stewart following the lap 17 restart. As Jenkins approached lapped traffic on the final round, Stewart closed the gap but was unable to mount a serious challenge, falling two car-lengths short of Jenkins as the former I-30 Speedway track champion took the checkered flag aboard the Team Affiliated No. 1J Maxim.

Stewart snared the second transfer position to Saturday night's finale, while Crockett settled for the show position. Past STN winners Wayne Johnson, Tim Crawley and Mike Ward diced for position throughout, with Johnson beating Crawley to the line for fourth. Crawley was disqualified when he failed to report to the scales afterward, handing the fifth position to Ward.

Hull raced from 14th to claim sixth, with 15th-starter Dale Howard in seventh. Ramey crossed the stripe in eighth, with 17th-starter Greg Wilson and Joey Montgomery completing the top ten.

Ward, Jason Johnson, Montgomery, Alley, Crawley, Stewart and Crockett all claimed 12-lap heat race victories, with Steven Tiner, Rilat, Preston Peebles II, Derek Drown, Mitchell Moore, Sammy Swindell and Chad Kemenah winning the 12-lap qualifying races. After his heat race win, Jason Johnson scratched from his qualifying race when a power steering line failed, bringing an end to his night.

Flip victims on the night included Jim Bowden, Richard Holt, A.G. Rains, Chad Jones, Pete Butler and Robert Bell. There were no injuries. While Jones continued after his qualifying race tumble to earn a feature starting position, he was forced to scratch from the feature, enabling first alternate Stenhouse to start the main event.
