SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- TJ Stutts of Liverpool started the 2004 season at Selinsgrove Speedway where he left off in 2003--in Victory Lane. The 24-year-old wired the field for the win in the 25-lap season opening event for the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass sprint cars Saturday night.
Stutts was at the wheel of Michael Barshinger's No. 39 entry sponsored by Barshinger Builders and Trone Outdoor Advertising. The victory was the ninth of Stutts' career at the Snyder County track.
AJ Stroup of Evandale won the 15-lap pro stock feature, while Keith Bissinger of Bloomsburg took the checkered flag in the 12-lap roadrunner main event.
Selinsgrove Speedway will present a four division racing program of sprint cars, late models, pro stocks and roadrunners Saturday, April 3 at 6 p.m. Track gates will open at 4 p.m.
Stutts drew the pole position for the start of the sprint car feature and never looked back at the drop of the green flag. On each ensuing restart, the young speedster was able to streak away from the field and eventually post a 2.94 second margin of victory.
The first half of the event saw second-place starter Dave Neuman, a veteran super sportsman driver and rookie sprint driver this year, race in Stutts' shadow.
Meanwhile, fifth-place starter Duane Mausteller, fourth-place starter Blane Heimbach and seventh-place starter Davey Franek were jockeying for the third spot.
It wasn't until lap 14 when the event's first caution flag unfurled for John Smith's stalled race car on the frontstretch. At the same time, Nate Snyder's sprinter stopped on the backstretch.
When the race resumed, Stutts streaked away from the field. But what took place behind Stutts the second half of the event was an intense battle for second. Layton stormed into second on the restart but was being held up by several lapped cars.
The final caution flag waved on lap 21 when Cory Haas' car spun in turn four after contact with the guardrail. The last four laps saw Franek power into second with 11th-place starter Kevin Nouse making a late-race charge into third.
Stutts drove to a convincing win over Franek, Nouse, Layton and 12th-place starter Bob Beidleman.
Polesitter Nate Kerstetter powered into the lead at the start of the pro stock feature. Kerstetter led the first four laps until his race car lost a wheel in turn two. At this point, fourth-place starter AJ Stroup inherited the lead and held off the challenges of third-place starter Gerald Kratzer, seventh-place starter Peanut Heintzelman and ninth-place starter Jake Buck.
The top four broke away in a lead pack and raced nose to tail to the finish. At the checkered flag, it was Stroup who was victorious by just .25 of a second over Kratzer, Heintzelman, Buck and Brad Trump.
Sixth-place starter Rick Bixlier led the first four laps of the roadrunner feature until ninth-place starter Keith Bissinger drove by him for the lead. Once in front of the pack, Bissinger stretched his lead and posted a 3.75 margin of victory over Bixlier. Jim Somers, Brad Mitch and Chris Eckert rounded out the top five.
