Five Hundred Free Cameras At Perris Auto Speedway!
(LAKE PERRIS, CA - July 10, 2001) This Saturday Night is Fan Appreciation Night at Perris Auto Speedway and KATY Radio is going to give away 500 free cameras to early arriving fans (until they run out) as they purchase their tickets. As fans walk into the front gate from 3:00-4:30 PM, they will be greeted by the SCRA drivers and their cars. The drivers will be there to pose for pictures and sign autographs.
In addition to the KATY Camera giveaway, some lucky fans will receive gifts from Perris Auto Speedway sponsors.
Fans will receive an extra bonus when popular Sprint Car star Tony Jones returns to the SCRA Wars. Jones, 31, son of Sprint Car Hall of Famer Bubby Jones, last raced at The PAS in May. He then parted company with longtime car owner Gene Cowherd and has been looking for a ride on the West Coast ever since.
This Saturday Jones will drive for ex-USRC Midget driver Bill Lloyd Jr. Last year, former SCRA Rookie of the Year Jeremy Sherman steered Lloyd's car to tenth in SCRA points with one main event win. After the season, Lloyd parked his car and it did not look like he would be back in 2001. His car remained parked until July 4th when it returned to action with "Hotfoot" Troy Cline behind the wheel.
Known for his breathtaking slide jobs, Jones made racing history at The PAS last November when he won the richest paying Non Wing Sprint Car race in history at the 5th Annual Oval Nationals. The win in the 50-lap main event paid Jones a cool $25,000.00. To celebrate, the personable Corona resident made like Indianapolis 500 winner Hileo Castroneves and climbed the front straightaway crash fence.
Even though Jones is expected to receive a hero's welcome from the fans, he will be in tough when the green flag drops. Two of the hottest Sprint Car drivers in the nation, Cory Kruseman and Richard "The Gassman" Griffin, are ready to resume their battle for the 2001 SCRA title. Kruseman, of Ventura, won the July 4th 50-lap main event at The PAS. Three nights later at Santa Maria Speedway, the Silver City, New Mexico based Griffin won the 30-lap main event. In doing so he took a huge cut out of Kruseman's point lead and now trails the 30-year-old by only 129 points.
Kruseman is looking for his first ever SCRA Championship while Griffin is seeking his fourth in a row.
Spectator gates will open two hours early at 3:00 PM on the Saturday.
Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds. Take the 215 Freeway, exit at the Ramona Expressway and go east two miles to the fairgrounds.
