Bruce Best in ASCS Rocky Mountain Region Shootout at Dodge City
DODGE CITY, Kan. (July 23, 2006) -- Garry Lee Maier was just a quarter of a lap away from completing a sweep of the American Sprint Car Series Rocky Mountain Region double at Dodge City Raceway Park, but it was Tony Bruce, Jr., playing the role of spoiler with a dramatic last corner pass to steal the win in Sunday night's 25-lap feature.
Bruce rode in third most of the way before racing past Gary Taylor for second on the 24th lap then zipping underneath Maier in turns three and four to take his second checkered flag of the year aboard the Salina-powered Best Well Service No. 18 Maxim.
"That last yellow helped, it gave me a chance to move my wing all the way back," Bruce explained afterward. "I didn't know if we could get there or not, all I could do was go for it and we lucked out tonight."
After winning Saturday night's preliminary feature, Maier led the field to the green flag and outdueled fellow front row starter Steven King through the opening pair of corners for the early lead. King kept pace until his mount jumped out of gear in turn three on the third lap. King got his machine back under power, but not before falling to fourth as Taylor and Bruce charged by.
Maier began working lapped traffic after just six laps, weaving through lapped machines adeptly with Taylor matching him stride for stride. The lead chase through traffic was interrupted after eleven rounds though, when rookie shoe Ricky Montgomery spun to a stop in turn two.
Back under way, Taylor stayed with a handful of car-lengths until the race's second and final caution flew for the disabled machine of Preston Peebles II with 17 laps in the books.
Maier set sail on the high side once again on the ensuing restart with Taylor and Bruce in tow. The leaders reached traffic again by the 23rd lap and when Taylor hesitated momentarily behind a lapped car in turns one and two on the white flag lap, Bruce raced by on the low side to take over second.
Bruce wasn't done however, setting his sights on Maier. Racing through the middle of the track, Bruce reeled in the leader and surged by on the low side in the final corners to take command as the checkered flag flew.
Maier settled for second, with Taylor taking the show position. Holding down fifth position from the outset, J.D. Johnson slipped past King at the line by inches to snare fourth. King rounded out the top five, with C.J. Johnson, 14th-starter Marc Robe, 22nd-starter Dustin Hall, current series point leader Patrick Bourke and Jake Martens completing the top ten.
Scott Box, J.D. Johnson and Montgomery each captured heat race victories, with John Jacob topping the "B" Main.
