After a successful Bug Day Practice session, all is set for the 2002 Port Royal Speedway season opener Saturday March 30 at the Juniata County oval. Scheduled to compete are the AuMiller's Insurance Sprint Cars and Stong's Auto Parts Pro Stocks.

Port Royal Speedway season opener Saturday March 30 at the Juniata County oval. Scheduled to compete are the AuMiller's Insurance Sprint Cars and Stong's Auto Parts Pro Stocks. Gates will open at 11 a.m. with warm-ups at 12:30 p.m..Racing gets under way at 1:00 p.m. Ticket prices will be $ 12.00-general admission,Students 12-17,$7.-and under 12 free. Pit passes will cost $18.
A kids Easter Egg hunt will be held for youngsters up to the age of twelve in the speedway infield starting at 12:30 p.m.
Speedway officials will continue with afternoon racing on Saturdays April 6& 13. The high powered Late Models join the schedule for both shows. Gates will continue to open at 11a.m. with racing at 1 p.m.
The seasons first night race will be Saturday April 20th.
At least forty four race cars signed in for Saturday's practice session. Racers included Sprint Cars,(8), Late Models,(7), Pro Stocks,(13), Enduro Cars,(12),Modifieds,(2), Midgets(1), and 4 Cyl.Stock Cars,(1).
Scotty Haus was the fast car in the Late Model division. Haus and Kenny Dickson conducted tire testing on several companies tires. Dickson was also quick.Jere Wierman appeared with the family no. 65 on his car for this season. Several Bedford Late Models driven by Gary Beck,Mike Shoemaker and Rance Garlock were also on hand.
Kyle Ganoe appeared in a white no.0 Sprint Car sporting KG Motorsports on the hood. Ganoe ran a blue numbered 8 car last season.Other local Sprint drivers practicing included Joe Deihl,Cliff Brian, who will compete again at Port Royal this season, Daryl Stimeling and Dustin Hoffman.
The Pro Stock division showcased several new cars. Jim Palm, Todd Snook, Bill Powell and Matt Parks have beautiful new cars that almost look to good to race. Parks body style was also unique compared to most.
All things considered the start of the 2002 season looks promising at Port Royal Speedway. Make plans to enjoy the year at the Juniata County oval.
