5/5/01, PORT ROYAL, PA – Keith Kauffman looked like he was running on a rail on Saturday night at Port Royal Speedway as he destroyed the field enroute to his 102nd career speedway feature win in the nights 25-lap main event for sprint cars. After taking the lead on the fifth circuit from Kitanning driver Kevin Schaeffer, Kauffman piloted his Middleswarth Potato Chips No. 7 to a convincing victory of more than a straightaway over Todd Shaffer and in the process took over the lead in the speedway’s point standings in his quest for a tenth track championship.
Elsewhere, Gere Weirman and Gary Beward picked up wins in the late model and pro stock divisions respectively. Coming up on May 12 at Port Royal will be a three-division program of sprint cars, late models and pro stocks, getting underway at 7 p.m.
The start of the sprint car feature was marred by a seven-car pile up at the start of the back stretch. After polesitter Mike Walter clouted the inside guardrail in turn one and lost the front end on the car, the back of the pack was sent scrambling. Walter ended up flipping his mount simultaneously with Alan Cole. Others involved included Joe Deihl, Peron Reasner, Kyle Ganoe, Rod Stroup and Jay Reichard.
When racing resumed, outside front row starter Kevin Schaeffer zoomed into the lead followed closely by ninth starter Todd Shaffer. Kauffman, who started 11th, seemed to come out of nowhere in the early going while sucking fast to the inside guardrail and maneuvered into second on lap four then blistered past leader Schaeffer with 20-laps remaining to begin annihilating the field.
At the halfway point, Kauffman had nearly a straightaway lead and with five to go, the 50-year-old veteran from Mifflintown was actually racing on the backchute while second place runner Shaffer was motoring past the grandstand. Working both sides of the track at the finish, Kauffman cruised to the easy win ahead of Millerstown’s Shaffer, 12th starter Len Thompson of Macungie, Todd Hestor of Middleburg and Carlisle driver Shawn Keen. Sixth through tenth went to 22nd starter Sean Michael, Brook Weibley, Mark Smith, Schaeffer and Troy Whitesel.
Keen, Smith and Schaeffer picked up sprint car qualifying events. In the 20-lap late model feature, McClure driver Tim Wilson started on the pole and was trailed early by Gere Weirman and Dave Kepner. Wilson threatened to dominate early in the event but with five to go, Stewartstown driver Weirman was zeroing in on the leader.
There were just two laps remaining when fifth starter Weirman was able to execute a winning pass in turns one and two. After driving side by side with Wilson off turn four, Weirman surged ahead at the white flag then pulled out to a two-car length advantage at the checkered flag. The win was Weirmans first ever career victory anywhere. Wilson rode home second followed by Steve Campbell, Dave Kepner and Jeff Bryner. Tony Adams, Tim Gray, Mike Lupfer, Travis Dillman and Eric Kauffman rounded out the top ten.
Wilson and Kepner won late model heats.
Mifflintown driver Gary Beward sped to his second win in a row in the 12-lap pro stock feature. After starting sixth, Beward powered around Tim Krape and early leader Matt Parks to take over the lead on the third go around. Once at the front, Beward was forced to contend with a persistent Krape over the rest of the distance, dueling in a bumper to bumper battle for the last five laps. In the end, it was a smooth, low riding Beward who prevailed by two car lengths over Krape.
Glenn Miller, Jim Palm, Scott Dorman, Donnie Hughes, Matt Parks, Scott Wilson, Peanut Heintzelman and Scott Bargo rounded out the top ten. Beward and Krape won heats for the pro stocks. <pre> RACE SUMMARY
