Port Royal, PA The man from Mifflintown returned to victory lane Saturday night April 19 at Port Royal Speedway. Keith Kauffman drove the Middleswarth Potato Chips no. 7 to the front and withstood several challenges to record his 116th career win at the Juniata County oval.
Sean Michael from Allentown, PA started eighth and drove the Zemco Headers no. 1 to a second place finish. Harrisonville's Mike Wagner finished third with Todd Hestor of Middleburg fourth. Mark Smith completed the top five. Sixth through tenth were Troy Whitesel, Todd Shaffer, Mike Erdley, Dustin Hoffman, and Dave Hahn. Heat events for the 26 car field were won by Kauffman, Hestor and Shaffer. Daryl Stimeling of Lewistown won the consolation.
The race was caution filled and required a fuel stop with just two laps left. Kauffmans most serious challenge came from Todd Shaffer who had misfortune strike when he lost his front wing. Shaffer rebounded from the rear of the field to finish in the top ten. Kauffman talked about the start of the new season with PR Man Craig Rutherford after the race. " We've had some trouble getting started. We haven't had any luck and didn't pull many good pills. Part of it is luck. The crews working hard and we're getting better." Kauffman stayed high on the cushion of the speedway while most challengers tried to drive low to pass. Kauffman added, " the top was where it was fast. I stayed out there." Kauffman was joined in victory lane ceremonies by division sponsor Brandon Aumiller of Aumiller & Associates Insurance.
Dan Stone of Selinsgrove, PA drove the Stone Excavating no. 21 to his first ever AB Auto Glass/Ramsey's Car Wash Late Model Feature win. Stone started second. Stone and Wayne Walls of St. Thomas, PA led the race before Walls tangled with a lapped car which forced him to restart on the rear. Harold Ranck of Mifflintown, PA had a fine run to finish second with Steve Campbell third. Mike Hess started thirteenth and finished fourth with Walls rallying to get fifth. Sixth through tenth were Tim Gray, Mike Lupfer, Jeremy Stone, Billy Wampler and Scott Sipe. Heats for the 25 car field were won by Yoder, Wierman and Mike Lupfer.
The 15 lap Stong's Auto Parts Pro Stock feature was won by Gary BeWard. Scott Dorman was second. Third through fifth were Glenn Miller, Bill Powell and Jim Palm. Completing the top ten were Eric Cauffman, Harry Peffer, Brad Trump, Dave Theurer and Alex Frey.Heat went to Palm and BeWard. There were 18 cars.
The 30 lap Pizza and Sub Shack Enduro Dash was won by Herm Renninger. Craig Imes, Butch Renninger, Scott Clemens and Scott Hopple followed. The remainder of the top ten included Jan Powell, Carl Windish, Jerry Blauch, Steve Fike and Rick Hippensteel.
A Kids Easter Egg Hunt was held in the speedway infield prior to the nights racing action. Race officials announced the formation of a new kids club with sign ups starting in about two weeks. Monthly functions are planned.
Port Royal returns to action Saturday night April 26 with a three car show of Aumiller & Associate Sprint Cars, AB Auto Glass/Ramsey's Car Wash Late Models and Stong's Auto Parts Pro Stocks. Gates open at 5 P.M. with racing at 7. Fans are also reminded that tickets are now on sale for the Charlie Daniels Band Concert to be held Saturday June 21 at Port Royal Speedway. Tickets cost $ 22 dollars on the grandstand and $25 dollars on the track.(bring your own lawn chair). Prices rise June 1 to $ 27 dollars grandstand and $ 30 dollars track side.
