Chuck "Cobra" Hebing Takes Bite out of ASCS Patriot Opener at Fulton

Rich Vleck, FULTON, NY (May 5, 2007) - On Saturday, for the second year in a row, Chuck Hebing won the American Sprint Car Series Patriot Region season opener. It was also the second time in a row that he has sponsored a night at the track and won his money back.

Chuck Hebing swept the first round of action for the 2007 ASCS Patriot Regional event at the Fulton Speedway, leading all 20-laps in the A-main to claim his 17th career win to increase his stronghold on the all-time Patriot wins list.

"Cobra" was clearly the class of the field in the feature, but he had to survive a few scary moments in turns 1 and 2 to hold off his new teammate Bryan Howland for the win. The first incident took place half-way into the race when he made contact with the lapped car of Darrell Quackenbush, the second came two laps away from the finish when he hit the inside berm, putting the car on two wheels and nearly flipping the No. 45. Even after losing his massive advantage, he still had enough to pick up the double-checkered flags.

"That second (incident) really scarred me," said Hebing in Victory Lane in front of his snake-skinned paint scheme on his maxim chassis. "I had a feeling I had a pretty good lead though so we were able to get through it."

After winning National Parts Peddler Heat 3, and a week after flipping at Virginia Motor Speedway in a dash during ASCS Mid-Atlantic Competition, the Ontario, NY hot shoe put himself on the Engler Pole by getting around Jason Barney to win the Palm Beach Grading Boat Captain and Crew Dash. The rest of the way he would not be contested as he won the $1,500 top prize put up with the help of Shuttleworth Asphalt Sealing, Red Bear Hand Cleaner and Mike Emhof Motorsports.

While "Cobra" was slithering through lapped traffic, eventually lapping up to the top-12, his teammate Bryan Howland was slicing his way around lead lap competitors to get up to the runner-up spot. Howland, who won a sprint race at Fulton last year, used the same bottom line that won him that event to move up from his 7th place starting position to eventually get around Jeff Cook on lap 9 to take over 2nd. Howland appeared he might be able to reel in Hebing in lapped traffic but ran out of time in the quick 20-lap feature.

Jason Barney recorded his best career ASCS Patriot finish with a third place run at a track he used to frequent with a modified. Barney was also the winner of National Parts Peddler Heat Two in his Charles Tibbets No. 87.

Jeff Cook moved up nicely in his heat to set him up well for the feature, where he finished fourth. Cook also finished fourth in another ASCS Patriot event at Fulton in 2003 in his rookie season.

Pennsylvanian Josh Weller first trip to Fulton resulted in a solid top-5 showing. Weller started 14th but quickly moved his way to the front in his No. 63.

Don Adamczyk showed that 2006 was no fluke as he recorded a 6th place showing, ahead of Jared Zimbardi, who out dueled Adamczyk to win NPP Heat 1. Canadian Rick Wilson, local Blake Breen and KSE Hard Charger Geoff Quackenbush completed the top-10.

The surprisingly ultra-fast Fulton, NY facility saw lap times run in the 13 and 14-second brackets around the 3/8-mile high-banked oval with one of the highest caliber field the ASCS Patriots have ever seen. There were 23 cars in attendance on a cool, but clear evening for the sixth attempt at Fulton Speedway's Season Opening Show. Only two cautions flew the whole night, both in the feature for single car spins.

This was also the first race for the A-Verdi Storage Containers King of CNY Series Within A Series. Even more money has been added to this point fund to help keep the racing as strong as it was on Saturday Night at the home of the 2007 Championship Race on September 8.
