Strickler and Kaylor Win Firsts at Path Valley
Spring Run PA__ Randy Kaylor of Manheim in PA 305 Sprints and Mark Strickler of York in 600 Sprints each won their first features Friday night at the Path Valley Speedway Park. Allen Felix of Shippensburg won the Legends feature when the cars ahead of him self-destructed.
In a thriller to close the night, Matt Horst of Liverpool started 17th and survived or avoided crashes and spins to build his points lead and win his second feature of the season. "It was the most fun I've ever had, in a car. The track was awesome," he said.
Defending champion John Rasp of McConnellsburg won his third feature in the Thunder Cars, and in Mini Stocks, Ronnie Garlock of Mt. Union won his second feature and dedicated his win to fellow racer and advanced cancer victim Dave Staley. Staley, of Mapleton, last drove his #85 Mini Stock at Path Valley three weeks ago.
After taking the Memorial Day weekend off for the first time in some six years, Path Valley returns to the regular three-event weekend with the Hobby Stocks joining the regular 600 Sprints, 270 Sprints, Mini Stocks and Thunder Cars on Friday night, June 3. Then Saturday the karts and four-wheelers race as usual in the afternoon and the low-budget Strictly Stocks race Saturday evening.
The Thunder Cars opened the action and as Jeremy Ott and Lyle Barnes battled for second, veteran John Rasp took off to lead by almost half the track before the first of two cautions on lap 11. Off secured second place on lap 16 and went after Rasp, but not enough race remained and Rasp won by about four lengths. Rasp, Ott, Barnes, Terry Smith and Wes Scofield were the front five and Barnes and Ott won the heat races.
Past champion Donnie Hendershot went to the outside to catch up to Mark Strickler in the 600 Sprints feature, but after three lap 17 cautions thinned the front-runners, Strickler also went high and wide to keep his lead and take his first ever win at Path Valley. Strickler, Hendershot, Jake Murphy, Jesse Snyder and Davey Sammons were the front five and Jordon Frontz won the consi while Cody Darrah, Snyder and Richie Fitz won the heats.
Zach Deiter and Lawrence Garrison led the early Legends laps and Allen Felix took the lead on lap four. He held his own until Randy Kissinger caught him and passed on lap 16, but on a final lap caution restart Kissinger and Butch Brough tangled coming out of turn four and Kissinger spun to catch Jason Ewing head on. That put Felix back in the lead and he said in victory lane, "I hate to win one that way, but a win is a win." Felix, Greg Burd, Zach Deiter, Bill Harris and Geremey Sheaffer were the front five. Burd, Ewing and Brough won the heats.
Through three restarts and a few lapped sprints, Randy Kaylor led every lap in the 305 Sprints feature. The crash of the night came on lap 18 with a red flag for flipping and rolling sprints that included Von McGee, Brent Comp and Don Slack, all with severely damaged wings. Kaylor built a lead ahead of Roger Irvine through the final three laps with Tommy Beavers, Jim Kennedy and Mike Freet filling out the front five. Irvine and Comp won the heats.
The Mini Stocks raced hard until their only caution when on lap 17 Mike Beidel spun after being passed by Ronnie Garlock, who led every lap. Garlock, Leroy Long, Frankie Gordon, Tim Burkholder and Kyle Wiser were the front five finishers. Tim Burkholder and Kevin Thomas won the heats.
With ten cautions in the first nine laps, the 270 Sprints feature was anyone's race as Craig Myers led until Cody Darrah caught up on lap seven. Darrah took the lead on lap 12 and then burned his motor, leaving Myers, Joe Trone and Matt Horst to fight it out ahead of the full field. Horst went high and to the outside to pass Myers on lap 18 and built a lead of a full turn in two laps. A final lap caution saw Horst hold his lead high and wide to the wall for his second win of the season. Horst, Trone, Mike Casario, Brian Kishbaugh and Brad Weber were the front five. Chad Myers, Cody Darrah and Brian Kishbaugh won the heats.
Gates open at 5 p.m. for the Friday night races, at 10 a.m. for the Saturday kart and quad events, and at 5 p.m. for the Saturday evening races.
