Spring Run, PA_ Young Brent Comp of Elliottsburg led every lap for his first win ever in the PA 305 Sprints Sunday at the Path Valley Speedway Park. Four past winners, Randy Kaylor, Von McGee, Todd Spangler, and Joey Hershey in order, followed Comp in the front five, and the heat race went to track points leader Hershey.
"I just drive it," the modest teen said, "My dad does all the setup and mechanical work."
In equally thrilling vein, Heath Hehnly of Adamstown vowed to be back more often after he won his first in 270 Sprints and Jimmy Brookens of Fayetteville appeared to lock up the Valvoline Cup national points championship as he won his eighteenth feature this season in 600 Sprints.
Brookens led from lap one and 'Hyper' Mike Dicely came from fifth to challenge Brookens for the lead by lap three but Dicely never managed a pass as they raced round and round with only two cautions and Brookens hugged his inside groove through the turns, turning Path Valley into a circular kart track.
Past master Lynn Knepper of Somerset won in the Dwarf Cars while Lyle Barnes of Chambersburg got the Thunder Car win and Kyle Wiser of Orbisonia won with a borrowed car in the Mini Stocks. The Mechanic's Races went to John Winsett in Dwarfs and Charles Wingard in Mini Stocks.
The season's only Sunday daytime race for sprints and stock cars was a makeup points race from the Friday night rainout, and it attracted several in microsprints who cannot race at Path Valley on most Friday nights. That included Hehnly who finished the season third in points at Lanco Speedway.
Next Friday's rain makeup 5 p.m. points race for sprints and stock cars features the alternating Hobby Stocks rather than the 305 Sprints and the INEX sanctioned Central PA Legends rather than the Dwarf Cars.
Then Saturday night, Oct. 23, Path Valley welcomes the hundreds of regional karters for the second annual Go-Kart Finale.
The regular season concludes with a Friday night points race for sprints and stock cars and a Saturday night Strictly Stock race for the former junkyard cars in four, six and eight cylinder on Halloween weekend, Oct. 29 and 30. Tickets are available at the track for the annual Awards Banquet Nov. 20 in Pleasant Hall.
The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. The new phone number at the track is 717-349-7111.
