Hershey, Brookens and Callahan Star in Path Valley Sprint Races

Spring Run, PA_ Joey Hershey of Chambersburg in the PA 305 Sprints and Jim Callahan of McVeytown in the 270 Sprints both started on the pole and ran away from the field for their wins Friday night at the Path Valley Speedway Park.

Jimmy Brookens of Fayetteville started tenth in the 600 Sprints and quietly and calmly eased gradually forward to take the lead from Brian Walker in lap 12 for his sixteenth overall win of the season.

In stock car action it was Frankie Gordon of Ft. Loudon earning his first win of the season in Mini Stocks and Lyle Barnes of Chambersburg winning his third feature in Thunder Cars while Mike Hay of Somerset ran away with the Dwarf Cars win.

The fall action at Path Valley moves up a notch next Friday night, Sept. 10, with the first race ever to introduce the Path Valley Hobby Stock class, a low cost alternative to the V-8 Street Stocks that have completed their season. They will be featured along with the INEX Legends Cars and the four regular weekly classes, and that night is another Fan Appreciation Night with $2 off the regular $7 grandstand admission ticket.

Jimmy Brookens, in the 600 Sprints that turned out 30-strong, stole the thunder from the headline full size 305 Sprints with a drive from tenth to his win. Brian Walker, the defending 270 champion, has found a 600 Sprints ride in the 3X Hendershot micro, and Walker led Jesse Snyder until lap 17 when Brookens found an opening and took over. The front five in 600 Sprints were Brookens, Walker, Snyder, Jake Murphy and Richie Fitz.

The PA 305 Sprints lineup watched young Joey Hershey take off from the front row and race away from them. Six red or yellow flags slowed the first half the race, but Hershey built a lead of nearly a turn in a single lap after most restarts. Todd Spangler, Brent Comp, Jim Wentz and Michael Alleman filled out the front five. The 305 Sprints return to Path Valley Sept. 17.

The full field of 270 Sprints opened with a bang when Josh Dressler hopped his #007 over the turn two light. He was apparently free of injury but could not continue. Callahan took command on the first lap completed in the #01 that is for sale. Chad Myers raced into second past Shane Penny and Sean Good and Brian Walker came up through the field for the fourth and fifth spots. Callahan said he wants to be in a full-size sprint next season and that next week will be Myers' turn.

The Dwarf Cars opened the night with Josh Sigman and Mike Hay racing side by side for the first two laps, and then Hay took off to a decisive win. For his third win in Thunder Cars, Lyle Barnes waited until lap six before he got past Terry Smith and then built up a significant lead. The Mini Stock feature was even more exciting as the Two P'd Off Ponies from Groundhog Valley clashed in the early laps as Ray Moore and Ronnie

Garlock swapped the lead back and forth. Meanwhile, Frankie Gordon and Gary Dehart were right behind waiting for an opening, and they moved into second and third on lap 15 and then Gordon took the lead going into turn one on lap 18. At the finish it was Gordon in his first win of the season, Dehart, Moore, Bard and Garlock fifth.

The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. The new phone number at the track is 717-349-7111.
