Path Valley Racers Beat Storm in Fast Finishes
Spring Run, PA_ Like the lightning flashing in the distance, Jimmy Brookens flashed into the inside of turn four on the first lap to pass Gary Linderman for the 600 Sprints lead and then never faltered as he outdistanced a stellar field Friday night at the Path Valley Speedway Park.
"They have to let me lead because I'm handicapped," the jovial paraplegic Fayetteville racer and past track champion joked. "Seriously," he added, "every week it gets harder and harder to win here."
In similar fashion defending 270 Sprints champion Brian Walker of Somerset dashed to the inside of turn three to pass Colby Womer on lap two and then outdistance Rodney Glass by more than a length for his second win.
"I saw Glass beside me once," Walker said, "but this Friday field has to be the toughest micro racing anywhere. Every class here is tough." He added that he and the other micro sprint racers really appreciate the work of the V-8 street stock drivers this week and the four-cylinder drivers the week before to smooth a wet track and get the races in the record books.
Greg Burd of Boiling Springs opened the night with a convincing win in the Central PA Legends Cars, his first of the year. Then the thunder cars took the track over and crashed, broke and spun to seven caution or black flags in the first 11 laps. At the finish of lap 12 flagman Steve Murphy checkered the race as a rainstorm made the track too dangerous to race upon. The win went to John Rasp of McConnellsburg who led at that point.
When the rain stopped after a brief delay, the V-8 Street Stocks came out to help run the track back in and then as lightning flashed in the background, Terry O'Donel of Doylesburg led every lap of the V-8 feature.
Gary Dehart got past Mike Beidel in the mini stock main event and then ran away to lead by more than a full turn at times until lapped cars closed in the leaders as Kyle Wiser edged out Beidel in second place.
No fewer than three cars shed wheels during the night's features, including one that disappeared over the backstretch scoreboard. All six main events were completed at 10:15, shortly before the rains returned.
Next Friday night the PA 305 Sprints and the Dwarf Cars replace the street stocks and Legends in the Path Valley lineup, and then the track's operators, Two Wheel Promotions, hosts a three-day holiday weekend of AMA motorcycle and four-wheeler racing for the Northeast Nationals amateur championships May 29-31.
The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. The new phone number at the track is 717-349-7111.
