Spring Run, PA- Jim Callahan Jr. of McVeytown in the 600cc Sprints and Butch Brough of Newville in the Legends Cars repeated past wins Saturday night at the Path Valley Speedway Park.
First time winners were Ed Krupa in the 270cc Sprints, Dave Emory in the 250cc Sportsman Sprints water-cooled class, and Fred Brown in the 250cc Sportsman Sprints air-cooled class.
The 270 Sprints raced first and finished their feature just after 8 p.m. The entire program was completed for the 55 sprints and Legends Cars by 10 p.m. and 270 Sprints winner Krupa and his team were apparently rushing to attempt to make a second feature at another track on the same night and skipped the victory lane celebration and photos.
The Saturday night teams asked at the beginning of the season for one Saturday a month off so next Saturday, August 18, they will be off and the AMA Motorcycles Short Track Series will take their place with gates open at 4 p.m. following the afternoon kart program.
Ed Krupa and Rodney Glass won the 270 Sprints heat races and the top five feature finishers were Krupa, Jesse Snyder, Mike King, Rodney Glass, and Jim Myers.
Defending champion Jimmy Callahan, who also races a modified sprinter in the 270cc class Friday nights, said his 600cc Sprint has a purely stock engine and requires little maintenance beyond changing the oil and cleaning and adjusting the spark plugs. His maintenance program paid off as he won both the heat race and the feature. The top five 600 Sprints finishers were Callahan, Brett Schoenly, Dave Emory, Kyle Purks and Rich Gilmore.
Donnie Potts and points leader Harry Garber won the Legends Cars heats but Butch Brough grabbed the lead and the win. The front five feature finishers were Brough, Potts, Vern Smith, Scott Houdeshell and Garber.
The first five across the line in the 250 Sportsman water-cooled sprints were Dave Emory, Randy Baughman, Randy Pitt, Chris Heckendorn and Rich O' Neal. Baughman won the first heat and, in his best showing yet at Path Valley, Rich O'Neal won the second heat race.
Fred Brown, who finished second to his brother Tim last week, held off heat winner Randy Hake to take his first Path Valley checkered flag. Third went to Josh Watkins.
