McKENZIE, TN - Lance Dewease and Keith Kauffman have been battling in Central PA all season and last week they continued their battle in the Carquest Pennsylvania Sprint Speedweek. On Friday, Dewease captured the prestigious Mitch Smith Memorial in a thriller over Kauffman at Williams Grove Speedway. Kauffman got his revenge by winning Saturday's feature at Port Royal. Jimmy Hawley and Ed Lynch Jr. also scored a one-two J&J finish at Lernerville Speedway on Friday night.
In Friday's Mitch Smith Memorial, Keith Kauffman took the early lead in the Middlesworth #7 J&J and weaved his way through lapped traffic with Lance Dewease following closely in the Harz #88h J&J. On the 22nd lap, Dewease made his bid for the lead exiting turn four. The pass was successful and Dewease went on to win his fourth race of the season at WIlliams Grove and his third Mitch Smith Memorial feature event.
"Keith didn't clear some of the cars and it gave me more momentum to close on him around the top," said Dewease. "We had the car set up for the middle and the end of the race, and when he couldn't get away from me, I figured we'd be able to get him in lapped traffic. My guys just told me to be patient early because the car would come to me later."
Saturday's event at Port Royal Speedway was the sixth leg of the eight-race Carquest PA Speedweek and Keith Kauffman became the first repeat winner as he led four other J&J competitors in the top six spots (Kauffman Middleswarth #7 J&J - 1st, Todd Hestor Middleswarth #7m J&J - 4th, Fred Rahmer Hamilton #77 J&J, Lance Dewease Harz #88h J&J - 6th).
Kauffman took advantage of his outside front row starting position as he jumped to the lead at the green and led every lap. The victory moved Kauffman to within 16 points of the speedweek point leader Dewease.
"We have led a lot of laps this week during Speedweek, be we didn't win many," said Kauffman following his 105th career Port Royal win. "I got stuck behind three lapped cars and I knew the other fast cars were coming. This is a great car, team and I have a great owner. We are running good this year. There was a time that I thought I would never win five features here let alone 105 of them."
At Lernerville Speedway on Friday night, Jimmy Hawley won his third Triangle Gasoline Sprint Feature in Dr. Crawford's #C3 J&J as he successfully worked lapped traffic and passed #2L J&J of race leader Ed Lynch Jr. with four laps to go. The victory allowed Hawley to add to his point lead at the half-mile oval.
