NORTHERN AUTO RACING CLUB (NARC) SPRINT CARS, BY JIM ALLEN, JUNE 1, 1998

Santa Maria, CA . . . Santa Maria Speedway promoter Doug Fort announced he is forced to cancel the June 6 Budweiser Golden State Challenge sprint car event at his one-third mile oval due to flooding.

It marked the sixth El Nino related cancellation of the NARC-Budweiser Shoot Out Series season. The event will not be rescheduled.

The facility, which has not been allowed the opportunity to run a racing event in 1998 due to weather related problems, is currently deluged with ground water that has no place to drain. Half the infield is currently underwater and more than 50 percent of the parking lot is unusable.

The race for the "King of California" sprint car crown has now been reduced to a 11-race battle. Randy Hannagan is the current point leader.
