KAEDING CAPTURES NARC HEADLINER AT KINGS SPEEDWAY "Second NARC victory of the season"

Hanford, CA (May 8) . . . Defending Northern Auto Racing Club champion Brent Kaeding closed the gap on Randy Tiner's NARC-Budweiser Shoot Out Series championship point lead with his exciting 30-lap sprint car victory at Kings Speedway Friday night.

Kaeding, steering Al Peterson's potent Al's Roofing-sponsored Maxim, inherited the lead from Randy Hannagan on lap 20 and held off the aggressive challenges of Tommy Tarlton the remaining distance to secure the win.

Combined with Tiner's eighth place finish, Kaeding now trails the point leader by a 471-461 margin in the NARC-Budweiser championship standings.

Hannagan outgunned Paul McMahan on the initial start and set the standard for the 22-car grid for the first two-thirds of the contest. However, he was unable to establish any type of advantage over his competitors due to eight caution flags which slowed the event.

Three of those were red flags for the crashed cars of Jason Statler, Steve Kent, and Brian Coelho. Statler was taken to a local hospital for observation, complaining of back and neck pain.

McMahan's pursuit of the leader ended on lap 12 with steering problems, moving Kaeding into the second spot. Kaeding trailed the leader for several laps, until Hannagan stopped in the fourth corner on the 20th go round with a suspension problem.

Kaeding took over the point on the restart, but found his hands full contending with the pesky advances of fifth starter Tommy Tarlton.

Tarlton tried every groove in his Tarlton & Son Baselite/Suburban Propane TCR in an attempt to overhaul the leader but to no avail.

Kaeding survived a final restart with only two-laps to go to secure his second win of the season and the 132nd of his NARC career. He dedicated the victory to Pete Albini, the father of his crew chief Billy Albini, who passed away earlier this week.

"I looked up at the scoreboard and saw that I had all these young guys chasing me," said Kaeding, referring to Tarlton and 16-year-old third place finisher Roger Crockett. "Tarlton was all over me and wasn't cutting me much slack."

"I was waiting for Brent to make a mistake," explained Tarlton, who finished three-car lengths behind the ten-time NARC champ. "Now I realize that Brent Kaeding doesn't make mistakes."

Crockett, making his first NARC appearance in Roger Henderson's GT Parts J & J, posted his best ever NARC finish.

Fifteenth starter Bobby McMahan charged through the field in Roy Bumgarner's TCR to finish fourth. He earned the River City Copy & Graphics hardcharger award for his efforts.

Brother Paul McMahan's crew made repairs to his JB Enterprises mount, allowing him to roar back through the pack to score fifth.

The second five drivers to cross the checkered flag were Jason Meyers, Jim Taves, semi-winner Tiner, Monte Faccinto, and Lee Brewer.

Earlier, Kaeding set a new one-lap NARC qualifying record at the three-eighths mile oval. His 13.267 second effort was the best among the 29 entries.

Meyers, B. McMahan, Faccinto, and Peter Murphy were the heat race winners.
