NARC AND GOLDEN STATE SPRINT CARS INVADECALISTOGA OVER MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
Calistoga Speedway will host two-nights of exciting sprint car racing action, this Saturday and Sunday (May 23-24), with the traditional Northern Auto Racing Club (NARC) Memorial Day weekend doubleheader.
This will mark the first appearance of the season by the NARC-Budweiser Shoot Out Series at the historic half-mile oval. The scheduled May 2 NARC/Golden State Challenge season opener at the track was rained out.
"El Nino has thrown us for a loop," said Napa Fair Manager Mike Kenney. "We run a limited number of events at our track, so every rainout has a big economic impact on our fairgrounds and our community."
In fact, Calistoga and the Napa Valley have experienced more than its fair share of rainfall. Normal precipitation in Napa, which is located just 25 miles to the south, is approximately 30 inches. Calistoga Speedway has experienced a record 70.4 inches of rainfall.
As a result, the inclement weather has slowed several scheduled facility improvements. Among them is a brand new concrete retaining wall around the entire track and a new concession stand.
El Nino permitting, a field of 35 of California's top sprint car pilots are expected to converge on Calistoga. In addition, several former NARC titlist's will appear at an autograph session and awards ceremony at Saturday's Walter T. Ross Salutes the Champions of NARC.
Heading the list will be 1960 NARC champion Fred Hunt of Carson City, NV; the first ever champion in Northern Auto Racing Club history. Hunt recently underwent heart bypass surgery, but stated that he "would not miss the event for all the money in the world."
Also expected is eight-time NARC legend LeRoy Van Conett, 1971 NARC titlist Billy Anderson, 1976 ace Johnny Anderson, 1986 kingpin Rick Hirst, and current ten-time NARC champion Brent Kaeding.
The Champions of NARC will be signing autographs near the front entrance between 6:00-7:00 p.m. (Several other champions are expected, but could not be confirmed as of press time.)
Sunday's event is the Tribute to Gary Patterson, which is a championship points race in the battle for the coveted "King of California" sprint car crown. Patterson lost his life in a racing accident at Calistoga in 1983.
The Northern Auto Racing Club is bringing two dynamite championship points races to Calistoga. Rio Linda driver Randy Tiner is the pacesetter of the group as the current NARC and Golden State Challenge points leader. However, his lead in both series combined, is only 11 points.
Other top contenders making up the field will be former San Jose track champion Randy Hannagan; the McMahan brothers, Bobby and Paul, or Rio Linda and Oroville respectively; Steve Kent of Fresno; Jason Meyer and Graydon Cross of Clovis; Kingsburg driver Jason Lund; and Kevin Pylant of Santa Cruz.
The McMahan brothers have won seven of the past 12 events at Calistoga Speedway. Tiner has captured the last two.
Front gates open both days at 5:00 p.m. Qualifying will get started at 6:30 p.m., followed by racing at 7:30 p.m. Calistoga Speedway is located at the fairgrounds in Calistoga, approximately 25 miles north of Napa on Highway 29.
